After the two Martyrs who suffered at Thessalonica, this group is appended; but it is assigned to no place, in these words in the Epternach apograph of the Martyrology of Saint Jerome: "And elsewhere, of Paul, Matutinus, Orbanus, Saturninus, Quintilian, Puplus, Victor, Successia, Juliana, Palatinus, and two others." In the Blume and Lucca codices better: "Successus and Julian"; the rest agree. In the Paris edition, after Publius is added "Ingenuus," and at the end "Julius," the rest agreeing with the Lucca manuscript, provided the name "Mediolanum" is expunged—badly inserted after Matutinus—and for "Orbanus" read "Urbanus." In the Labbe manuscript these are found: "Paul, Victor, Julian, Successus, Maturinus, Urbanus, Julian." The first four are listed the same way in the Augsburg manuscript of Saint Ulrich, and then "Martinus" was read in place of "Maturinus." In the Reichenau manuscript you will find these: "And elsewhere, Paul, Orbanus, Saturninus, Publius, Matutinus, Victor." Of these the first two are mentioned in the Rhinau manuscript. In Ado of the Liège manuscript of Saint Lawrence and in the manuscript Florarium, are added to the Thessalonians above mentioned: Matutinus, Urbanus, Claudianus—for which it seems Julian should be put. By Grevenus the same Thessalonian Martyrs are joined by Paul, Matutinus, and Orbanus. Likewise Blessed Successus is placed separately. The first three are noted in the Barberini manuscript, as we have published in the Supplement to the genuine Bede. In an ancient Kalendar prefixed to the works of Saint Isidore in the Vallicellian codex of the Fathers of the Congregation of the Oratory, the name of Saint Paulinus was placed, who in others is Paul, the leader of these Martyrs. In the Aachen manuscript the memory of Paul and Successus is kept. Galesinius has these: "In Egypt of the blessed Martyrs Paul, Victor, Nicanor, Apollonius, and the Virgin Martiniana." Of these, Paul and Victor belong here; the rest are referred in Egypt on the following day among the Omitted, and Marcianus or Martinianus is written. We take "Palatinus" as a proper name, because in the Paris and Lucca editions the words "and of two others" are placed after it, so that Palatinus and Julius could seem to belong to another group, which it suffices to note here.
