ON SAINT THERMUS, MARTYR AMONG THE GREEKS.

Commentary

Thermus, Martyr among the Greeks (St.)

G. H.

The Greeks celebrate the Holy Martyr Thermus indicated in the Menaea, whom also Maximus Bishop of Cythera in his "Lives of the Saints" exhibits. In the Dijon MSS. Menaea of Petrus Franciscus Chifletius he is said to have undergone martyrdom by fire, Sacred cult, which the same is handed down by this distich added in the printed Menaea, with an allusion to his name, which signifies "hot."

Thermus, bearing the warm love of divine passion, Judges the heat of blazing fire as cold.

In the two Turin codices of the Duke of Savoy these things are read: "And of the holy Martyr Thermus, and of his sister with a maidservant." But concerning these women we shall treat separately shortly, because nowhere else is it indicated that the former, Κυρία or Lady, was the sister of St. Thermus. The Greek Acts of St. Therme are corrupted. From this place we conjecture that the Acts of the Greeks are corrupted, related on this day by Surius from Lipomano, in which Saint Therme, sister of Saint Simeon the Bishop, with her sister and a maidservant, is said to have been hung up and cut into two parts by a saw. For that Martyr was called Tarbula, or Tarbua, Tarbuta, and Pherbutha: and under this name she is referred to in the same Menaea on April 4. We, with the Roman Martyrology and others, give their Acts, described in the Roman Library, on April 22. Moreover, in what place or time St. Thermus suffered is not clear.
