Two classes of Martyrs reported in the transcripts of the Hieronymian Martyrology, namely the Nicomedians and the Sirmians, concerning whom we have already treated; Whether these Martyrs reported on this and the following day are different? was followed by a third class of African Martyrs, whom on the authority of Usuard and the Roman Martyrology we have deferred to the next day. After these, two Martyrs, Timothy and Diogenes, are reported in the same Martyrologies, who are again read on the following day in the same calendars, though with this difference, that on this day they are said to have suffered in Macedonia, and no companions are joined to them. But on the following day they are said to have undergone martyrdom at Antioch in Syria, and are joined with Macaria, in others Madiaria, and Maxima. We refer these, as being different, to both days, and on this day with the four Hieronymian transcripts: Usuard, Bellini, Galesini, and the more illustrious manuscript Martyrologies together with today's Roman mention them in almost the same words: "In Macedonia, the Saints Timothy and Diogenes, Martyrs." Canisius adds: "who endured cruel torments." Notker dissents, or rather goes astray, when he has these words: "At Nicomedia, Timothy and Theogenes." Maurolycus assigns a particular city of Macedonia: Whether they suffered at Philippi? "In the city of Philippi in Macedonia, Saints Timothy and Diogenes." The rest of the Acts are hidden, from which we might produce more certain things and distinguish them from the Antiochene Martyrs by a more solid argument.
