ON SAINT LUCIDIUS,
BISHOP OF VERONA IN ITALY.
CommentaryLucidius, Bishop of Verona in Italy (St.)
G. H.
Among the many prelates of the Church of Verona inscribed in the catalogue of the Saints, on this day, April 26, is commemorated St. Lucidius, Bishop of Verona. There are extant the ancient monuments of the Holy Veronese Prelates, collected by Raphael Bagata and Baptist Peretto, Sacred cult, and composed by Augustine Valerio, Bishop of Verona, published together at Venice in the year 1576: in which these things are contained concerning St. Lucidius: "Lucidius, Bishop of Verona, eulogy, was a man of extraordinary sanctity. He, particularly devoted to the contemplation of divine things, gave over to the Presbyters the care of all human affairs: he gave himself especially to reading and prayer, that he might be able to instruct the people in the law of God. The holy man died on the sixth day before the Kalends of April: his body was buried in the basilica of St. Stephen." So there, folio 39. Concerning the same, on folio 8, these things are read: burial in the church of St. Stephen, "The body of St. Lucidius the Bishop of Verona rests in the church of St. Stephen. As is clear from the ancient Tablet, from parchments in the sacristy of St. Stephen, from Francesco Corna, and from the Table of Saints on the day April 26." Onuphrius Panvinius, book 4 of the Antiquities of Verona, chapter 7, reports the Bishops of uncertain time and order from the ancient Calendar, and among them St. Lucidus is said to have died on April 26, buried at St. Stephen's:
And in chapter 4, treating of the Basilica of St. Stephen, he says that in it, in uncertain places, lie the bodies of the Holy Veronese Bishops Lucidius, Dimidrianus, Servulus, Vindemialis, in an uncertain place. Saturninus, and Lupus.
Ferdinand Ughelli, in the Bishops of Verona in volume 5 of Italia Sacra, writes that St. Lucidus was present at the Council of Sardica, under Pope Julius in the year 347. Whether he, or rather St. Lucillus, was at the Council of Sardica. But since in Athanasius in the second Apology, among the Bishops of Italy who were present at that Synod, Lucillus is placed after Severus of Ravenna, whom together with the others Athanasius calls as witness in the Apology to Constantius, Baronius here in the Notes thinks that wrongly in the Council, in place of Lucillus, Lucidus is found to have subscribed. St. Lucillus is venerated on October 31.
