Behold, we give this fifth class of Martyrs from four copies of the Hieronymian Martyrology: who in the most ancient Echternach manuscript are thus indicated: "In the fort of Aiovia, of Caprus, Maurus, and Captus the Deacon, Husandus, Prianus." Where the said fort of Aiovia, which in the Blumian manuscript is written "Aluvia," was situated, we have so far been unable to learn. That was formerly omitted in the Corbie manuscript printed at Paris, in which this is read: "And elsewhere, of Maurus and Captus the Deacon, Husandus, Prianus, Cyprus": of which the last in the prior copy is first, under the name of Caprus: for which in the Lucca codex is read "Capria"; and in place of Captus, is written "Castus," and toward the end "Pañi Priami." But Florentini in the Index, neglecting "Pañi," constituted only the name of Prianus, suspecting that by the fault of scribes the prior name, abbreviated from the second, had been inserted. What if by a similar fault the name of an island or

Cyprus or Capri, in which the aforesaid fort lay, were taken as the name of a Martyr? Indeed, we do not doubt that this error crept in rather often into the copying of the Hieronymian Martyrology by unskilled copyists, the already faultily written being transcribed still more faultily: which is easy when only the names of places and men are collected: but we have not wished on such a presumption to change or omit anything.
