This is the third class of Martyrs, described in four ancient copies of the Hieronymian Martyrology, and perhaps to be distributed into two groups: the first of these is so indicated in the most ancient Epternach codex: They seem to be divided into two groups, "And elsewhere of Romodianus, Igneus the Deacon, Rumetina, Remisurinus, with 24 others," and there is immediately added another group: "of Secundinus the Bishop, Alexander the Deacon, Bubatus, Saturus, Diodrus, Ropodianus, Nomensis." He who is the standard-bearer of the rest, where "Romodianus" is written, in the other three copies is "Pomodianus," and is said to be a Deacon with twenty-four others, namely Igneus, Rumetina, and Remisurinus being omitted: whom the Epternach MS. exhibits. Then in this is "Secundinus the Bishop," who in the other three is "Secundianus the Bishop." Alexander the Deacon and Saturus are named in the same way everywhere; but for the others also are substituted the names "Babutus," "Diodorus" and "Diotrus," "Repodianus" and "Nomensis."

[2] In an ancient Martyrology of the Vatican Library, marked number 5949, and written in Lombard script, these things are read: "At Alexandria of Saints Dorotheus the Priest, Pomodianus and Rodocianus the Deacons, who were extinguished by fire and cast into the sea with twenty-four others." Which with better distinction in the ancient Martyrologies of Cassino, whether extinguished by fire and drowned in the sea: also in Lombard script, and of the Roman Duke of Altemps, are thus handed down: "In Alexandria the birthday of Saint Dorotheus the Priest: and elsewhere of Pomodianus the Deacon and Rodocianus,

burnt with fire and cast into the sea, with twenty-four others." These 24, burnt with fire and cast into the sea, are also referred to in the Mss. of Trier of Saint Martin and Utrecht of Saint Mary, but wrongly added to Saint Pastor: of this we have treated above in the first class of Martyrs, among whom also is Rodocianus the Deacon. But "Podonianus" is read in the Vatican MS. of Saint Peter: who in the Aachen and Labbean mss. and in Greven is written "Pomodianus," and by fault of the copyist in the Augsburg MS. "Nomadianus," and "Rodimini" is added, or "Rodimi" in the Labbean, perhaps in place of Rodocianus, or of Rumetina. In the same, in the first place, Alexander the Deacon is celebrated.

[3] We abstain from conjectures which could be formed from what has been said: as that "Igneo" might have crept in for "igne," the word added to explain the kind of Martyrdom: that "Bubato" placed in the ablative, where the other names are written in the genitive, might be a name of place, and perhaps better elsewhere "Babuto" is written, and ought to be read "Babuco," that the city of this name in the Hernici may be signified: and other things of this kind.
