ON THE HOLY MARTYRS NICEPHORUS AND STEPHANUS.
Commentary.
Nicephorus, Martyr (St.) Stephanus, Martyr (St.)
By I. B.
[1] The Greek records also bring these forth, as having undergone the same contest; but where, when, and under what ruler, they do not reveal. They declare only this of them: "On the same day, the holy Martyrs Nicephorus and Stephanus are consummated by the sword." The same is in Cytheraeus. The Menaea add:
"For Nicephorus and Stephanus, who desired it, a crown of victorious end was woven."
In the last verse there is an allusion to the Martyrs' proper names: Nikephorou stephanos eplake telous. This is a different person from the Nicephorus who is celebrated on 9 February.
