[1] The illustrious Egyptian city of Alexandria celebrates on February 10 these Martyrs slain for the faith of Christ: of whom the first three are presented by the old manuscript Martyrology of Reichenau, or Augia Dives: And at Alexandria, the passion of Apollo, Protheus, and Orion. More fully, the ancient Roman Martyrology, which is attributed to Saint Jerome: At Alexandria, the passion of Apollo, Protheus, Orion, Plausus, and twenty others. In the lesser ancient manuscript Martyrology of Saint Maximin near Trier, Orion and one thousand six hundred others are recorded under February 9: and since they were omitted there, we have referred them to this day, on which Orion is venerated with his companions. Among the thirty-seven Egyptian Martyrs whom we recorded on the eighteenth day of January, and of whom we said that some are perhaps celebrated on February 9, are found Orion, Protea, and Plesius, and whether these are to be reckoned as different from those three may also be doubted. Apollo is absent there, as are the companions, whether twenty or sixteen hundred: so that for this very reason their commemoration seems to require repetition here. In the lesser manuscript Martyrology of Saint Maximin already cited, the passion of Saint Apollo is celebrated in the first place, without any companion.
