Under Hadrian.

Commentary

Valerianus, Martyr, at Brescia in Italy (St.) Valentinus, Martyr, at Brescia in Italy (St.) Saprutius, Martyr, at Brescia in Italy (St.)

I. B.

The birthday of these Martyrs seems unknown, except that Ferrarius in his General Catalogue of Saints writes in his Notes: The age of these Martyrs, They are said to have suffered a little before SS. Faustinus and Jovita. Galesinius testifies that their Discovery is celebrated on February 12 with these words: At Brescia, the Discovery of the holy Martyrs Valerianus, the Discovery on this day, Valentinus, and Saprutius: who, fighting for the faith of Christ together with the Blessed Martyrs Jovita and Faustinus, were crowned. He cites in his Notes, as does Ferrarius, the annals of Brescia. We have Elias Capreolus translated into Italian, in which I found nothing about them. Ascanius Martinengus in his History of the Saints of Brescia has Valerius for Valentinus, and Seprutius for Saprutius: and he testifies, as does Ferrarius, that their Discovery is recalled on this day in the Martyrology of the Church of Brescia. Martinengus adds relics: that their relics are preserved in the church of SS. Faustinus and Jovita ad Sanguinem, or of St. Afra: and that their Acts are hidden.

Support the Translation

The Acta Sanctorum has never been available in English. This site is translating all of it: January through July are done, August is underway, and the calendar runs to November 10, where the Bollandists stopped in 1940. The scholarship pipeline is built; what remains is a compute bill. Contributions go directly to translating more of the calendar.

The Acta was a funded enterprise for three centuries; the translation runs the same way. Everything here is free and stays free whether you give or not. Wroot Press is a small independent press — an imprint of Wroot Labs LLC, not a charity. Contributions aren't tax-deductible; they buy compute.
