ON THE HOLY MARTYRS SATURNINUS AND PLUTINUS

Commentary

Saturninus, Martyr (Saint) Plutinus, Martyr (Saint)

G. H.

Very many Saints bearing the name Saturninus are read in the sacred Fasti, of whom we have given thirteen in the month of January; and this one, of whom we now treat, is the eighth in order of days among the Saints of February, with still others to follow. The Saturninus the Priest and the Saturninus who suffered with very many others at Carthage in Africa, whom we gave on February 11, are referred by other Martyrologists to this February 12, as we said there. Whence some suspicion might arise whether this might not be one or the other of them. But since among the Carthaginian Martyrs, all of whom are named individually in the ancient Acts, there was no Plutinus, we therefore separate this pair of Martyrs from them. The great Greek Menaea and the Life of the Saints of Maximus of Cythera present them in these words: "On the same day, Saints Saturninus and Plutinus ended their lives by the sword." The Menaea add this couplet:

These remains of the slain Are of Saturninus and Plutinus.

The sacred bodies were preserved at Constantinople or certainly in another place, but the location and time of their martyrdom remain hidden.
