ON ST. PALLADIUS, ROMAN MARTYR, AT ANTWERP.

Commentary

Palladius, Roman Martyr, at Antwerp in Belgium (St.)

I. B.

The bodies of the Martyrs Ss. Florus and Palladius, excavated from the cemetery of St. Agnes at Rome and brought to Antwerp, were exposed to public veneration in the year 1652 with the approval of the Bishop of that city, Translation of St. Palladius in the year 1652, as we said on February 12 when we treated of St. Florus; for that day was dedicated to his celebration, and the following day to St. Palladius. And concerning him, beyond what was said there about both in common, nothing is available, on February 13, except that, just as the former was solemnly brought into the church of the Professed House of the Society of Jesus on Quinquagesima Sunday, so this one on the Monday after the evening sermon as well; and on Tuesday it was honored with a splendid array of sacred rites. We have nowhere else read of Palladius as a Roman Martyr. On January 8 a certain Palladius is mentioned, as also on the 7th of the same month one Palladas, each with several companions, whom some ancient Martyrologies say completed the course of their martyrdom in Greece; therefore we suspect this one is different from both of those.
