ON STS. FAUSTINIANUS AND IUVENTIA, MARTYRS IN BRITAIN.

Commentary

Faustinianus, Martyr in Britain (St.) Iuventia, Martyr in Britain (St.)

G. H.

We stated in the General Preface to January, chapter 4, section 10, that the ancient manuscript Roman Martyrology, or that of St. Jerome, was brought from Britain to Belgium, and perhaps by St. Willibrord, an Englishman. Indeed, that it was formerly received into use among the British Churches can be conjectured from this day and certain similar passages. For it opens with these Saints, less known elsewhere, and has the following: "On the fourteenth day before the Kalends of March. In Britain, the birthday of the holy Faustinianus and Iuventia." Only Faustinianus is mentioned in the manuscript Martyrology of Aachen and in the supplement of Hermannus Greven. All else remains hidden.
