African Martyrs Dionysius and 24 Others

27 February · commentary

ON THE HOLY AFRICAN MARTYRS DIONYSIUS AND 24 OTHERS.

Commentary.

Dionysius, Martyr in Africa (St.) 24 others, Martyrs in Africa

Author G. H.

These Martyrs are inscribed in the more ancient manuscript Martyrologies, and Dionysius alone, with no place or company of others indicated, is read in the small but ancient manuscript Martyrology of St. Maximin. In the manuscript of Paris belonging to our Philippe Labbe, the memory of Dionysius and 23 others is recorded without a place. In the manuscript of the monastery of St. Cyriacus, of Dionysius and 24 others. Among others, Africa is assigned as the arena of martyrdom. Thus the ancient manuscript Roman Martyrology, or that of St. Jerome, the printed edition of Bede, and the manuscript of Richenberg, and Rabanus: In Africa, of Dionysius and 24 others. Galesinius from a manuscript codex, Canisius in the German Martyrology, and Ferrarius in the New Catalogue: In Africa, of St. Dionysius and 24 other Martyrs. In the manuscript of Reichenau, some things are transposed and altered: In Africa, of Anteginis, Dionysia, and 24 others. Antigonus is the first, and pertains to the Thessalonican Martyrs already treated. But Dionysius, not Dionysia, is read in all other sources. Hermann Greven adds others: thus in the supplement to Usuard: In Africa, of Diunisius, Tacianus, Dionis, Martyrs, and 23 others. The names Dionis and Diunisius are the same as Dionysius. Tacianus is either Titianus among the Thessalonican Martyrs, or Datianus among the Smyrnaeans, of whom we shall now treat.

ON THE HOLY MARTYRS OF SMYRNA: SERVILIANUS, DATIANUS, AND LEANDER.

Commentary.

Servilianus, Martyr at Smyrna in Asia (St.) Dacianus, Martyr at Smyrna in Asia (St.) Leander, Martyr at Smyrna in Asia (St.)

Author G. H.

We have thus far given various Martyrs of Smyrna in January and February, to whom on this day these three are added, recorded in the ancient manuscript Roman Martyrology, or that of St. Jerome, in the manuscripts of Reichenau, Laetia, and Tournai of St. Martin, in these words: In the city of Smyrna in Asia, the birthday of Saints Servilianus, Datianus, and Leander. The same are commemorated without an assigned place in the manuscript of Paris belonging to our Philippe Labbe; but in the manuscript of Aachen, Leander alone appears, the others being absent due to the mutilated codex. In the small manuscript of St. Maximin, on the 28th of February, Servilianus is recorded. Concerning Tacianus indicated by Hermann Greven, we have treated among the African Martyrs. The time and manner of contest of these and the preceding Saints are uncertain.
