ON ST. NESIUS, MARTYR
Commentary.
Nesius, Martyr (St.)
Author G. H.
The Greeks in the great Menaea and in the Lives of Saints published by Maximus Cytheraeus furnish us with scant information about the manner of death by which St. Nesius attained the crown of martyrdom on the 27th of February, on which day they celebrate his birthday in these words: "On the same day, St. Nesius, beaten with ox-hide sinews, finished his life." In the Menaea the following couplet is added, confirming the manner of martyrdom:
"Nesius bears suffering by ox-hide sinews and prevails. For, strengthened in sinew, he has forgetfulness of his pains."
