ON ST. SALVATOR, BISHOP OF BELLUNO IN ITALY.
CommentarySalvator, Bishop of Belluno in Italy (St.)
Ferrarius reports in his General Catalogue of Saints and in his Catalogue of the Saints of Italy that St. Salvator the Bishop is venerated today at Belluno, on the Anassus or Piave River in the March of Treviso. The same author writes the following about him under the 3rd day of February: "St. Salvator the Bishop was, according to ancient tradition, the prelate of Belluno; he governed that church for many years with the greatest holiness, performing many miracles during his life and after his death, Churches dedicated to St. Salvator the Bishop for those who implored his aid. For this reason altars were erected to him and churches dedicated in various places. Of these, one under his invocation is still visible today in the village of Maretio, not far from Belluno, and another at the Carthusian monastery, which has largely collapsed from great age. His memory is honored by the Church of Belluno with an annual celebration, though on a different day because of intervening solemnities." In his annotation he then adds: "The body of this holy bishop is believed to rest in a stone sepulcher of the ruined church mentioned at the Carthusian monastery, where this inscription can still be read on the wall: S. SALVATOR EPISCOPVS BELVNI. At what time he lived among us is unknown. His feast is noted in the records for the 3rd day of January."
