St. Celsus, the fifth Bishop of Trier, a confessor commemorated in the German Martyrology and other sources. He is placed in the mid-second century as a contemporary of Pope Hyginus, and his relics rest in the cemetery of St. Eucharius at Trier. 2nd century

Commentary

Celsus, Bishop of Trier (St.)

The German Martyrology records the birthday of Celsus, the fifth Bishop of Trier, on this day, and the Finding of his relics on the 23rd of February. The Cologne edition of Usuard from the year 1521 also mentions him on this day, as do Maurolycus, the manuscript of St. Mary in Utrecht, and the manuscript Florarium; but in the last he is called a Martyr, while in the others a Confessor. Cratepolius makes him a contemporary of Pope Hyginus. Our Brouwerus, in the Annals, says he succeeded Auspicius in the year of Christ 141. Joannes Euen, in his Epitome of the Deeds of Trier, says he was illustrious in birth and lofty in spirit, as if to answer to his very name. The Cologne edition of the Martyrology of Usuard from the year 1490 has: "At Trier, St. Celsus, Bishop and Confessor of Christ, who rests in the cemetery of St. Eucharius." We shall treat of his Finding on the 23rd of February.
