ON THE HOLY EGYPTIAN MARTYRS PETER, PHILOROMUS, ZOTICUS, CASTULUS, AND AVENTINUS.
CommentaryPeter, Martyr in Egypt (St.) Aventinus, Martyr in Egypt (St.) Castulus, Martyr in Egypt (St.) Philoromus, Martyr in Egypt (St.) Zoticus, Martyr in Egypt (St.)
The ancient Martyrologies make mention of these Holy Martyrs. For the manuscript Florarium, the Martyrology of the Church of Brussels, and other manuscripts have: "In Egypt, of Peter, Aventinus, Castolus." Notker: "In Egypt, of Philoromus." The Carthusians of Cologne in their Additions to Usuard: "In Egypt, of Aventinus and Castolus." The most ancient manuscript of St. Jerome: "In Egypt, of Philoromus, Zoticus, Castolus, Peter, Aventina." All these same names, except Aventinus, are listed in the Dungal manuscript, but with no place assigned, mixed in with others, and Valentiana and Arabicus are added: it is uncertain whether either of these was substituted for Aventinus or Aventina, and whether they should be joined to these or to the African Martyrs.
