Pachomius and Papyrinus

Sts. Pachomius and Papyrinus are martyrs recorded in the Greek Menaea, who were drowned in a river and crowned with martyrdom. They are distinct from the more famous Pachomius of Tabennesi and other saints of the same name.

Commentary

Pachomius, Martyr (St.) Papyrinus, Martyr (St.)

St. Pachomius, Abbot of Tabennesi, is celebrated on May 14; St. Pachomius, an Egyptian Bishop and Martyr, on November 26. A third Pachomius, a monk of Tabennesi and one of the principal disciples of the great Pachomius, Various persons named Pachomius. is mentioned in his life; it is not known to us whether he is venerated anywhere. A fourth is recorded by Maurolycus, the Carthusians of Cologne, the German Martyrology, and others on May 14, an abbot in the Scithian region of Egypt, about whom Heraclides treats in chapter 11. But he is called Pachon by Palladius in chapter 29. Distinct from all of these is the one whom the Greek Menaia record on this day: "St. Pachomius," they say, "and Papyrinus, cast into a river, were crowned with martyrdom." We have discovered nothing further about them.
