Commentary

Mucius, Martyr in Africa (St.) Victor, Martyr in Africa (St.) Mistrianus, Martyr in Africa (St.) Salvius, Martyr in Africa (St.) Misellianus, Martyr in Africa (St.) Victoricus, Martyr in Africa (St.) Teussa, Martyr in Africa (St.) Fortunatus, Martyr in Africa (St.) Veneria, Martyr in Africa (St.) Sarta, Martyr in Africa (St.) Saturninus, Martyr in Africa (St.) Hortisianus, Martyr in Africa (St.) Leucius, Martyr in Africa (St.) Misurianus, Martyr in Africa (St.) Vincentia, Martyr in Africa (St.) Alba, Martyr in Africa (St.) Timotheus, Martyr in Africa (St.) Ingenula, Martyr in Africa (St.) Victoria, Martyr in Africa (St.) Other Martyrs in Africa (SS.)

This glorious company was furnished to us by the most ancient Martyrology of St. Jerome, in this manner: In Africa, of Mucius, Victor, Mistrianus, Salvius, Misellianus, Victoricus, Teussa, Fortunata, Veneria, Sarta, Saturninus, Hortisianus, Leucius, Misurianus, Vincentia, Alba, Timotheus, Ingenula, Victoria. Only three are listed in the Rhinau manuscript: In Africa, of Mutius, Victor, and Fortunatus. More, but confusedly, in the ancient Irish manuscript of the Dungal community: Of the three brothers, Speusepi, Helapi, Munici. Victor, Fortunatus, Muccus, Teucisius, Martin and 45 others. Micca, Mistrianus, Marcellus, Salvius, Sulpicius, Mesalanus, Teusea, Victoricius, Veneria, Sata, Leonilla, Junilla, Ingenula, Victoria, Saturninus, Alba, Hortisianus, Vincentia, Leucius, Rubentius, Misurianus, Timoseus. In several names, therefore, they diverge. The Irish manuscript has Muccius for Mucius; Mesalanus for Misellianus: perhaps Messalianus or Messalinus was written; Victoricius for Victoricus; Teusea for Teussa; Sata for Sarta; Timoseus for Timotheus. It adds, beyond the Triplets, Leonilla and Junilla, of whom we have treated above, and Teucisius, Micca, Marcellus, Sulpicius, Rubentius, Martin and 45 others. On Rubentius and Martin, whom we conjecture to be the Martyrius of St. Jerome, we treat separately below. Whether those 45 are to be joined to these two or to the Africans is uncertain. We judge Sulpicius to be Pius, the Bishop of Bourges: Marcellus, the one of Die, whom we noted should be deferred to April 9. For Fortunata, the Rhinau and Dungal manuscripts have Fortunatus; we preferred to follow these.

ON THE HOLY MARTYRS RUBENTIUS AND MARTYRIUS.

Commentary

Rubentius, Martyr in the East (St.) Martyrius, Martyr in the East (St.)

The same manuscripts of St. Jerome supplied these also: In the East, the birthday of Rubentius and Martyrius. The Dungal manuscript, as we have already said, mixes them with the African Martyrs; and substitutes Martin for Martyrius; and it is uncertain whether it adds the other 45 companions to him or to those.
