Martyrs of Nicomedia: Leontius

20 January · commentary

ON THE HOLY MARTYRS OF NICOMEDIA: LEONTIUS, CYRIACUS, VITUS, CENDEUS, URSUS, FLORUS, FELIX, MARCIA, AND CHELIDONIA.

Commentary

Leontius, Martyr at Nicomedia (St.) Cyriacus, Martyr at Nicomedia (St.) Vitus, Martyr at Nicomedia (St.) Cendeus, Martyr at Nicomedia (St.) Ursus, Martyr at Nicomedia (St.) Florus, Martyr at Nicomedia (St.) Felix, Martyr at Nicomedia (St.) Marcia, Martyr at Nicomedia (St.) Chelidonia, Martyr at Nicomedia (St.)

These are enumerated in the ancient Martyrology of St. Jerome: "At Nicomedia: Leontius, Cyriacus, Biticendus, Ursus, Florus, Felix, Chelidonia, Marcia." In the Rheinau manuscript: "Nicomedia: Leontius, Cyriacus, Cendeus." The same are listed in the Dungal manuscript, but without the place being specified, in a confused order, and with some additions. Concerning Leontius, Ursus, Felix, Chelidonia, and Marcia, the manuscripts agree sufficiently. For Cyriacus, the Dungal manuscript has Ciracius. A Cyriacus who suffered at Nicomedia with ten others is recorded in the Roman Martyrology and others on April 7; it is likely that he is different from this one, since no companions are named there. The Dungal manuscript calls Florus Flora. For what our manuscript has as Biticendus, the Dungal manuscript reads Bitus, and with some names intervening, Vitus and Candeus. But the Rheinau manuscript distinctly calls him Cendeus. There is in the Roman Martyrology a St. Cyndeus, Priest and Martyr, on July 11. The Dungal manuscript further adds Calestus, Adaflexus, and Martialis, who should be joined to these or to others, we cannot determine. On January 21, in the manuscripts of St. Jerome and of Dungal, Felix, Cendeus, Vitus, Florus, Leontius, and Cyriacus are recorded; whom we believe to be the same.

ON ST. CYRIACUS, MARTYR AT NEVEDUNUM.

Commentary

Cyriacus, Martyr, at Niviiunum (St.)

From various sources.

Many cities in Gaul and elsewhere are known by the name Nividunum or Nevedunum; which one this is we cannot conjecture, being deprived of the light of the Acts. Nor is it sufficiently clear to us whether, as we here suspect, there is an error, and whether those who are joined to Cyriacus -- Tharsus, Leucius, and Callinicus -- are the same as those listed in most Martyrologies on January 28. The most ancient manuscript of St. Jerome has: "At Nevedunum: Tharsus, Leucius, Gallinicus, Cyriacus." In the Dungal manuscript, Cyriacus is recorded, and Leontius for Leucius; also Gallinicus, but not Thyrsus or Tharsus.
