ON THE HOLY MARTYRS ORION, MEMNON, HERMES, JANUARIA, TECHUS, AND OTHERS.

Commentary

Orion, Martyr (S.) Memnon, Martyr (S.) Hermes, Martyr (S.) Januaria, Martyr (S.) Techus, Martyr (S.) Others, Martyrs

[1] These are joined by the ancient manuscript Martyrology of S. Jerome, and likewise by the Dungal manuscript, with those 18 whom we judged above should be assigned to 16 April. The first manuscript reads thus: Their names listed with others. "11th before the Kalends. In Spain, in the city of Valencia, S. Valerius the Bishop and Vincent the Deacon, and 18 others: Quintilianus, Cassianus, Matutinus, Publius, Urbanus, Martialis, Faustus, Successus, Felix, Paulus, Petrus, Januarius, Primitivus, Ebotus, Cedianus, Optatus, Fronto, Julius, Bellicus, Municipius, Techus, Orion, Memnon, Hermes, Januaria; also Januarius, Mucius, Saturus, Bellicus." The Dungal manuscript has "Paulinus" for "Publius" (which we interpreted as Publius); "Bootus" for "Ebotus"; "Tetoticus" for "Techus"; and omits Januaria, the second Januarius, Mucius, Saturus, and the second Bellicus. We shall treat of these four separately. The same manuscript adds "of Hermes and 19 others, and Felix with his companions." Who is this Felix?

[2] What Bellicus Municipius means, we have not sufficiently disentangled. They are written in both manuscripts as names of Saints. One might suspect that Bellicus is some municipium What is omitted. where the Saints underwent martyrdom: but in the manuscript of S. Jerome, the names of cities are rarely complete and scarcely ever expressed in the genitive case: in the Dungal manuscript, the place is never specified. We thought it better, however, to omit than to propose uncertain things to the reader. Whether these were crowned together with those former ones whom we assigned to 16 April, or separately and elsewhere, is not clear.

ON THE HOLY AFRICAN MARTYRS JANUARIUS, MUCIUS OR MINUTIUS, SATURUS, AND BELLICUS.

Commentary

Januarius, Martyr in Africa (S.) Mucius or Minutius, Martyr in Africa (S.) Saturus, Martyr in Africa (S.) Bellicus, Martyr in Africa (S.)

These are listed, as we already said, in the manuscript of S. Jerome with these words: "Also of Januarius, Mucius, Saturus, Bellicus." The Rhinau manuscript specifies the place: "In Africa, of Januarius, Minutius, Saturus."
