Another XXIV Martyrs in Africa
From various sources.
[1] This is another band of African combatants, enumerated in two most ancient manuscripts, those of S. Jerome and the Dungalense, though with the names varying slightly from time to time. The names of these Saints in the Martyrologies. The Dungalense codex reads as follows: "6th before the Kalends. Of Fortunatus, Agnes the Virgin, Veneria, Marina, Fortunata, Tecussa, Secdus, Perpetua, Juliana, Vincentia, Victuria, Donatus, Vitus, Saturninus, Messurianus, Paulius, Festus, Victor, Quintillus, Rogatus, Felix, Publicanus, Bonosius, Processus, Egotis, Pictulus, Vincentius, Primus, Aurilius, Secdus, Hilarius, Victor, Leocus, Datus, Julianus, Saturus, Callenitus, Lucius, Honoratus, Marosius, Castus, Caius, Gagus." The Martyrology of S. Jerome is somewhat more distinct: "6th before the Kalends. The Passion of S. Agnes. Donatus. Vitus. In Africa: Missurianus, Puplia, Victor, Quintillus, Puplianus, Festus, Felix, Bonosus, Processus, Veneria, Marina, Fortunata, Tecussa, Godditis, Secunda, Epictulus, Vincentius, Rogatus, Primus, Aurelius, Hilarius, Perpetua, Juliana, and another XXIV."
[2] In place of Publia, Publianus, Godditis, Secunda, and Epictulus, therefore, the Dungalense manuscript has Paulius, Publicanus, Egotis, variously expressed Secundus, and Pictulus. Which reading should be preferred, let others debate. In place of Publia, the Carthusians of Cologne have Publius in their additions to Usuard. Processus is recorded in the manuscript of the monastery of S. Martin at Tournai. Several with the same names as the rest have been recorded on other days, but since they appear with other companions, we judge them to be different. Thus from the same Africa, Victor, Felix, Fortunata, and Primus on 19 January, but with a different company. And on the 28th, Victor, Festus, Marina, and Perpetua, but with Censurianus, for whom the Dungalense manuscript has Messorianus, and another XXV, so that one may more probably suspect that the same persons are being enumerated again on that day also.
