ON ST. MAURITIUS.

This Saint the Synaxaria of Sirmond and Chifflet announce, partly in prose: "On the same day (1 July) the holy Mauritius, anointed with honey, and stung by bees, is consummated." On the same day (1 July) St. Mauritius, who, anointed with honey and stung by bees, was consummated; partly in meter: "Mauritius, anointed naked with honey, reckons the wounds of the bees sweet as honey." Mauritius, naked and smeared with honey, reckons the stings of the bees to be sweet honey.

In our manuscript was read "kechristheis," doubtless by error, as far as is clear from the laws of the iambic meter. I have substituted "ekchristheis."

The same codex of ours, of Sirmond and Chifflet, exhibits to us these holy 25 Martyrs. "The holy 25 Martyrs, who are from Nicomedia, are consummated by fire." The holy 25 Martyrs of Nicomedia are consummated by fire. Their elogium the manuscript of Chifflet completes in two iambic verses: "The number of the men whom the flame burned is a cycle, for five taken five times is clearly a cycle." The number of men whom the flame burned is a cycle, for five taken five times is truly a cycle.
