ON ST. QUINTIAN.

To Leontius of Autun I subjoin some holy Quintian I know not whom, since in some Martyrology I found them associated. In the classical ones he has no place, whoever at last that Quintian was, unless among the classical Martyrologies the Barberini one can be numbered, cited in the Usuardine preface number 36; in which the aforesaid conjunction clearly appears: At Autun, the deposition of Leontius the Bishop, and of St. Quintian: not of Quintian the Confessor as is in the supplements of Bede published by Papebroch. For what if the announcement be doubled, and a punctuation being placed after "Bishop," it be read: And of St. Quintian, who whether he be a Confessor or Martyr is hitherto unknown? Certainly the Vatican codex, in the Usuardine preface number 44, writes: And of St. Quintian the Martyr: and the only one among the Usuardine codices which makes mention of that Saint, the Victorine codex, attributes the same laurel to him: On the same day, of St. Quintian the Martyr. Someone may suspect that from some codex of this kind Maurolycus took his last announcement: Likewise, of St. Quintian the Martyr. For the rest, which title suits Quintian, whose countryman he was, when he lived, what he did, where, when he died, or was afflicted with martyrdom, whether he has anywhere a particular cult, whether perhaps he should be confused with some other Quintian either of I April, or of XIV or XVI June, I desire to be taught: here he is placed after Leontius of Autun only for this cause, that thus they seem joined in the aforecited manuscript Barberini Martyrology.
