Concerning these thus Florentinius: Fourteen Nicene Martyrs are expressed both in our codices and in the Antwerp codex (we call it the Epternach) and the Corbie (also the Achery), and eighteen anonymous ones. Some difference of names, obvious to each, appears, but such as cannot be emended without the consonance of many codices. The discrepancy between the two best codices, the Epternach and the Corbie, is very small. I have followed the Epternach, in which I judged that only the name Arteni was to be changed from the Corbie into Artemii: in the rest they agree, except that in the latter it is written Eucelli, for Eucolli or Encolli. The Lucca codex differs a little more, where these names are different: Emmii, for Emini; Alphi for Alethi; Eucoli, Eleti, Straton, Eudemon, and Apolupius. The Achery variants I do not enumerate, because they recede more from the genuine reading; ours I believe either to be true, or at least (which alone can be said in these matters) to approach most nearly to the true.

We follow again the two codices praised above, the Epternach and the Corbie, in the expression of the names, which are set forth a little otherwise in the Lucca in this manner: Johanis, Apri, Antheologi, Glitherii, Parenthi, Stratonis, which is nearly also the reading of the Achery codex. After that cohort, in both the cited codices is had: Elsewhere, of Agrestius. In the Lucca: And elsewhere, of Agrestius, Primolus. In the Achery: And elsewhere, of Agrestius, Primolus. I hesitated in doubt whether Primolus should be expunged, but since in some of the lesser Hieronymian Martyrologies, as in the Gellone and the Augsburg, that name is mingled with other Martyrs, and thus is received from the greater codices, I did not think it should be omitted.
