ON ST. MARTYROCLES, MARTYR.
Notice from the Fasti of the Greeks.
Martyrocles, Martyr among the Greeks (S.)
J. P.
This Martyr is noted in the Supplement to the printed Menaea from the Synaxary of Sirmond and the Manuscript of Chifflet, perhaps nowhere else to be found, as far as I suspect: unless perchance Τυροκλῆς, whom likewise marked with the title of Martyr I read in the Menaeum of Chifflet, coincides with our Martyrocles, the first syllable being struck out, as is easy enough. In the said Supplement therefore he is thus announced: Ὁ ἅγιος Μαρτυροκλῆς τοξευθεὶς τελ. St. Martyrocles, struck by arrows, consummates his contest. Have two hexameters, by which he is there honored:
Ὁ Μαρτυροκλῆς μαρτύρων εὗρε κλέος Μάρτυρ φανεὶς ἄριστος ἐκ τοξευμάτων.
Well did Martyrocles find the glory of the martyrs, proving himself a supreme martyr by the arrows.
