It was no easy matter, on this day, to construct a list, by which the Roman Martyrs of today might be arranged in the right number and order, since all the codices differ among themselves, and either exceed or on the contrary are exceeded, or are interpolated. The Corbie codex added at the end Majulus or Majolus and Silvius, who are not known in the others. The Lucca codices exhibit, thrust into the middle of the series of Martyrs, the announcement of the arrival and reception of the body of St. Benedict the abbot; but into the Epternach codex some things are ineptly sewn in, which perhaps the antiquary had found wrongly written in the margin. Thus it is read there: At Rome, of Stefanus, Leontius, Pelagia, Mauricius, Domnus, Milito, the Deposition of Idoneus with his sons. At Autun the deposition of Achilleus, Danihel. At Rome of Diomedes, etc. But to one even moderately attentive in these matters it at once appears that Idoneus with his sons by no means belongs here, inasmuch as the same codex treated of him expressly on the day July 1; whence also are received the words At Autun the deposition; for Achilleus and Daniel most certainly belong to the class of the Romans.
These things therefore, and the name of Pelagia badly placed, being removed from that list, there arises the text arranged by us, which, except for a few trifles in the diversity of names or their varying formation, agrees with the Lucca codices and the Corbie one, in which the names are more distorted, and besides the repetition of the name Archelaus is omitted, which is indicated clearly enough by the particle "likewise." But that the number of Martyrs has been rightly reckoned by us here, the little Hieronymian codex of Queen Christina of Sweden proves; in which at the fourth day before the Ides of July it is thus had: At Rome, the birthday of the holy Martyrs Stephanus, Leontius, Mauritius with others to the number of thirty-nine; so that consequently the whole company consisted of forty-two champions, as many as were enumerated above; for whom Notker put: At Rome, the passion of the Saints Stephanus, Leontius, Mauritius and many others.

This Martyr in the same terms on this day the Lucca and Corbie codices record: At Alexandria, of Euticius: the Epternach differs from the others, in that it adds Of Eufemia. But whither this most celebrated virgin and martyr of Chalcedon belongs, we have already said in the Passed Over.

I suppose they were virgins, although it is not expressed in the codices. In the Lucca codices I read: At Antioch, of Perdicia, Veronica, and Speciosa. The Epternach exhibits Prodocia alone, for whom the Corbie writes Prodixa. From the little Hieronymian of Queen Christina of Sweden, formerly of St. Columba of Sens, our reading is confirmed, although there they are referred to the fourth day before the Ides of July: perhaps from a mere transposition by the copyist.

These two Martyrs are announced in the first place in the text of Florentinius: In Africa, of Marianus and Januarius, to whom in the Corbie is joined Julianus, passed over by all the others. More confused is the Epternach list, beginning thus: In Africa, of Marianus. At Alexandria, of Euticius, Eufemia: and in Africa of Januarius: which here is not so much to be wondered at, since we have shown the following also to be distorted. I had doubted at first whether these two were not repeated from yesterday's class of the four African Martyrs Januarius, Marinus, Nabor, and Felix; but since they are placed in another place, and in another order, and the second name does not agree, I thought they should be left in their own possession; and this the more readily, because in most of the little Hieronymian codices nearly the same names, though sometimes in inverted order, are expressed.
