Michael Malinus, Confessor, among the Greeks (S.)

This Saint, of a sufficiently obscure name in the Greek fasti, about to be unknown to us, had he not become known from a few monuments, is celebrated on this day in the Greek Horologium, the surname τοῦ Μελείνου being added. He is besides related in the Typicon of St. Sabas with the surname Μαλείνου; according to which norm we too have expressed him in the title above. The Russian Menology, numbering him also among its saints, gives him the surname of Malinus. In the Greco-Muscovite Ephemerides is announced Michael Malinus the monk. Molanus among the Supplements gave him a place, thus commemorating: of the holy Father Michael Malænus. But whence this surname drew its origin, whether from Maleus, a Laconian promontory; or from the Malienses, who why they might not also be named Malini or Maleni? for in Greek they are called Μαλιεῖς or Μαλεεῖς; whether, I say, from the Malienses, a people of Thessaly; or whether rather our Saint was called Malinus from some other source, nothing is at hand whence I may define, as long as his life lies hidden from us.
