ON THE HOLY MARTYRS OF MILAN

MACARIUS AND MEGETIAS.

From the Hieronymian Martyrologies.

Commentary

Macarius, Martyr at Milan (S.)

Megetias, Martyr at Milan (S.)

Florentinius, in his Observations on today's text, rightly noted that the Corbie codex mentions only Macharius, whom meanwhile he did not observe to be altogether neglected in his own edition. The edition of Achery clearly exhibits him, in which, if I am not mistaken, it is better expressed than in the Lucca codex, where it is had "Mocharii"; for the reading of Corbie is confirmed by some smaller copies, in which, although the names of the whole little list are confused, they nevertheless read "Macharii," not "Mocharii": the Epternach codex wrote worse "Moeci," where also "Mogitiae," for the "Megetiae" of the Lucca codex; which reading is again confirmed from some contracted codices and from the Blume one itself. In a more polished and more received manner I have written "Macarii." Whatever Galesinius, in Florentinius, or other more recent writers have today marked, pertains not at all to the text of the Hieronymian Martyrologies.
