Most clear and most bright on this day is the announcement of the Lucca codices in the list of Florentinius: In the city of Amiternum, at the 83rd milestone from the city of Rome, on the Salutarian way (for Salarian), the birthday of St. Victorinus. In the Epternach codex there is nothing of light, but rather darkness, whence the confusion could arise; for it mixes everything upside down, as is abundantly clear from the text reported above. The Corbie codex is very similar to the Lucca ones: In the city of Amiternum, at the eighty-third milestone from the city of Rome, on the Salarian way, the birthday of St. Victorinus the martyr. And this without doubt is the genuine text, confirmed by other lesser copies, notably by the abridged codex of the Queen of Sweden, so that Florentinius sweats abundantly to reconcile these with the Roman, if those 83 Martyrs be reckoned as taken from the Hieronymian Martyrologies; since there and in the shorter ones they are attributed to Armenia; or it is doubtful whether they are to be joined with Victorinus. Let us rather say that, they being produced by Ado I know not whence, Usuard so copied them, in the way in which they are celebrated on this day by the Roman Martyrology, in which St. Victorinus, bishop of Amiternum, from the same sources of his, is set down on September 5: whether the same as, or other than, the one who is reported on this day in the Hieronymian Martyrologies, is not so far ascertained: we have preferred to keep today's Victorinus, whoever he is, in his place from the cited codices, and to add along with him the other class, taken from wherever, however much it may be doubtful to some whether it does not proceed from the mere confusion already sufficiently indicated.
