Septimia and Augusta

ON THE HOLY SEPTIMIA AND AUGUSTA, VIRGIN

From the Hieronymian Martyrologies.

Commentary

Septimia, Martyr (St.)

Augusta, Martyr (St.)

J. B. S.

Both are announced in all the larger codices in the same order, except in the disordered Epternach codex, where they are mixed with the above Laodicean class, in the Lucca one joined as "Nazaria and Celsa": but concerning these transformed names it has already been said in the "Passed Over." The purest text the Corbie codex reports: "And elsewhere, the birthday of the holy Septimia, and of Augusta, virgin." Further, whether this Augusta is the same as the one who is venerated at Serravalle in the Venetian dominion on the 27th of March, as Bolland once judged, there is nothing whence you might conjecture; especially while Septimia is added to her as a companion, and no position or place of martyrdom is added. I would rather believe that that Serravalle one should be confused with another who is marked on this day by Greven and others, and who in the codex of Monte Santo is called Augustina.
