ON SS. ZOSIMUS AND THECLA.

From the ancient Martyrologies.

Commentary

Zosimus, Martyr at Antioch (St.) Tecla, Virgin, Martyr at Antioch (St.)

G. H.

[1] The ancient copies of the Hieronymian Martyrology, the Epternach one and the Corbie one printed at Paris, refer to these Saints thus: At Antioch, of Zosimus and Tecla the Virgin. The same things, but the title of Virgin omitted, are read in the copies of the same Martyrology, the Lucca and the Blume; likewise in the Manuscript of Reichenau and another of the Queen of Sweden praised and published by Holstenius, The names in the Martyrologies. as also in Notker. But Tecla is also called Virgin in the Manuscripts of Monte Cassino, of Altemps, in a certain Trier one of St. Maximinus, and another of Corbie. Rabanus names only the former with these words: And at Antioch, of Zosimus. Which things are also read in the Martyrology published under the name of Bede, and in the Manuscript Calendar placed before the works of St. Isidore. Finally, the place of the contest, Antioch, being omitted, Zosimus is referred to in the Manuscripts of Augsburg of St. Udalric, of Paris of Labbe, and in Greven in the Supplement of Usuard. But he is called Zozonus in the Manuscript of Aachen. Thus far we have not found more about them.

D. P.

[2] But when Antioch is named simply; although there are several cities of that name in various Provinces, there is usually understood Antioch of Syria, What this Antioch is. the first See of St. Peter the Apostle, and therefore among the Patriarchal also the first after the Roman; whose proper Synaxaria, if they were unearthed from somewhere, would probably teach about these Saints, and very many others now unknown, no fewer things; than we now learn from the Constantinopolitan Synaxaria, preserved longer together with the Religion.

ON ST. CRISPINUS, MARTYR IN AFRICA.

From the ancient Martyrologies.

Commentary

Crispinus, Martyr in Africa (St.)

G. H.

In the third place: this Martyr is mentioned in the four old copies of the Hieronymian Martyrology: In Africa, of Crispinus. The same things are read in the very old Manuscripts of Reichenau, the double Roman of Cardinal Barberini, the Trier one of St. Maximinus, and another of the Queen of Sweden aforecited, in which it is read thus: In Africa, the birthday of St. Crispinus. But the place of the contest being omitted, St. Crispinus is mentioned in the Manuscripts of Augsburg of St. Udalric, and of Paris of Labbe, and of Prague: but Crispinus in the Manuscript of Aachen, and Crispus in Greven in the Supplement of Usuard. And these things found in the codices suffice, that the memory of that Martyr may be honored by us among the other Saints of this day, until from elsewhere something of greater light may shine.
