G. H.

We proceed with the ancient copies of the Hieronymian Martyrology; and with Francesco Maria Florentini, in his Notes on this day, we judge that this is another numerous cohort of sacred Combatants of both sexes, The first Group of ten of the Martyrs, native of the city of Rome. And so we distribute these Athletes into their groups of ten or decades, as we did above on the first day; that we may more easily and more to the comprehension of the Readers be able to indicate the various readings. Let the first group of ten therefore be constituted by the names of the Saints: Secundus, Maxima, Martinianus, Silvinus, Flavianus, Paulus, Petrus, Victorina, Matrona, Fausta. In these there is small difference; and only for Flavianus is also read Flantanus, and in place of Victoria is written Victorina. Let this be the series of the second group of ten: SS. Extricata, Antonina, Saturnina, [II,] Donata, Reducta, Maxima; likewise Saturnina, Paula, Julia, Florentinus; where with varying reading are written, Extricatus and Florentina, III, and in place of Reducta also Neducia. In the third group of ten stand SS. Fortunatus, Maxima, Urbana, Felicissima, Justa, Flavia, Matrona, Marciosa, Valentina, Fortunata. Among most of these women the writing varies, while the names Maximus, Orbanus, Marcia, [IV,] Valentia, and Fortunatus are noted somewhere. The handful of the fourth group of ten is thus listed: SS. Venusta, Donata, Maria, Gallica, Tertula, Vitalica, Evantia; likewise Julia, Sammata, Posinna. Here greater difference of writing occurs: for in place of Tertula, also the name Tertulla; Tertulus, and Testula is read: but for Evancia also Evantia, Evantus, and Evancus, likewise for Sammata also Sommata, and Sammatia is had; and finally in place of Posinna, also Possina is found.

[2] [V,] The class of the fifth group of ten is thus enumerated. Likewise of Saturnina, Concordia, likewise Donata, Felix, Valentinus, Januarius, Mastilla, Lucius, Maria, Marcella. But for the variant reading serve Januaria, Mastula, or Mustilla or Mascula, Marta, Marcilla. The order of the sixth group of ten is SS. Percus, Datula, Victuria, Jovianus; likewise Maxima; [VI,] likewise Felix, Tertula, Castulina, Tulla, Gaudolus. But in another way are written the names Procus, and Maximus: and the name Tulla in some is absent. For the seventh group of ten are offered SS. Modianus, Justus, VII, Saturus; likewise Saturus; likewise Felix, Dontula, Samina, Januaria, Fortunata, Saturnina. Of these in others are lacking the names Secundus, Saturus, Samina; for which is read also the name Sarmina, VIII, and Fortunata; and in place of Dontula is had Donatus; unless they are reckoned different. To the eighth group of ten are ascribed the Saints, Julia, Nina, Honoria, Donata, Victoria, Marcia; likewise Donata, Victoria, Marcia, Donata. Of these however the last three are omitted by us, because they are lacking in all the Transcripts, although they are read in that way in the most ancient Epternach one: several others also are lacking in the Blume Manuscript. [IX,] The handful of the ninth group of ten will be reckoned to be SS. Calpurnia; Extricata, Felix, Saturninus, Donatus, Cenonus, Primosa, Secunda, Januaria, Rogatus. But the names Extricatus, Saturnina, Donata, Cenona and Zeno, Primosus, Secundus, Rogata vary.

[3] [X,] In the tenth group of ten are coordinated the names of SS. Faustus, Fonteius, Tertulus; likewise Paula; likewise Rogatus; likewise Secunda, Januaria, Martialis, Felix. Of these the varying reading subjoins the appellations Fontacus, Tertulla, Rogata: but in some is lacking the name of the second Felix. [XI,] The eleventh group of ten is filled by SS. Fortunatus, Januarius, Adjutor, Fortunata, Nomitia, Paula, Rogata, Victoria, Donata, Mavorus: yet with some variety are written, Januaria, Fortunatus, Nomentia, or Nominotia, Donatus, Majorus, and Maturus. XII, The names of the twelfth group of ten are SS. Posinna, Prima, Urbana, Turninus, Januarius, Senecio, Julia, Marciana, Nondinarus, Castus. For difference is written also Urbanus, Senectio, or Senicio and Sintio. XIII, The thirteenth group of ten makes a class of SS. Datus, Florentina, Victuria, Piscina, Castulus, Saturninus, Victurianus, Fortunatus, Nina, Nundinus. But they differ in writing as Castula and Catulus, Fortunata, Nica, Nundina, and Nonnidus. XIV, The order of the fourteenth group of ten is contained by the names of SS. Saturnina, Cæcilia, Marina, Luciosa, Felicia, Maxima, Prima, Firmina, Evasius, Sildinus: but Saturninus and Sildina vary. The fifteenth group of ten is this: SS. Tertius, Fuscus, [XV.] Marcellina, Rota, Evasia, Sarmatia, Rodilia; likewise Maria, Salpurnia, Castula: where again there is some variety of reading in the names Tuscus, Sarmitia, Rotilla, other anonymous ones. Calpurnia. Finally for an epilogue is added the memory of Saturnina, Justa, Jocundus, Julius, with seventy-six others. In another Manuscript the number is contracted to sixty-seven: and the last three, expressed by name, are only in the Corbie Manuscript.

ON SS. MARIUS AND COMPANIONS.

From the same Martyrology.

Commentary

Marius, Martyr who suffered at Rome (St.) Jovinianus, Martyr in the same place (St.) Fortunatus, Martyr in the same place (St.) Oratus, Martyr in the same place (St.) Latina, Martyr in the same place (St.) Sabina, Martyr in the same place (St.)

G. H.

These six Martyrs were joined indeed to the preceding host; and therefore they seem also to have been crowned at Rome: yet, that to the wearied reader some rest may be given, we separate from the rest the names of SS. Marius (in another Manuscript Maria), Jovinianus (for which is also written Jovinianus and Joviniana), Fortunatus, Oratus, or Oratius, Latina, and Sabina. There was subjoined the deposition of Marcellinus the Bishop, whom we judge to be St. Marcellinus the Pope or Roman Bishop, of whom we treated on 26 April, as we said above among those Passed Over, and thus is finished the long class of Roman Martyrs joined together at the same time.

ON SS. THAMATUS AND COMPANIONS.

From the same Martyrology.

Commentary

Thamatus, Martyr at Caesarea (St.) Honoratus, Martyr at Caesarea (St.) Seleucus, Martyr at Caesarea (St.) Porfirus, Martyr at Caesarea (St.) Pafilus, Martyr at Caesarea (St.) Estiaus or Palæstinus, Martyr at Caesarea (St.) Rogata, Martyr at Caesarea (St.)

G. H.

After the Roman Martyrs related, there are referred to in all four copies of the Hieronymian Martyrology these six Martyrs, who suffered, as we judge, at the city of Caesarea in Palestine, where also on the preceding day seven crowned are commemorated. The first of these is Thamatus, then Honoratus, then Seleucus: although there is also someone of this name on the preceding day, because we judge this one different from that one. There follows Porfirus, in the Blume Manuscript Potphurus; then Pafilus or Paphilus, in the Corbie Manuscript Phumfilus: then Estivus in the Epternach Manuscript, for which in others is Palestinus. Finally by the consent of all is added Rogata. The standard-bearer of these, Thamatus, is indicated in the manuscripts of Gellone, Augsburg, St. Gall, and Paris of Labbe.
