Commentary

Pax, of the Order of Minors, of Cascia in Umbria (B.)

BY THE AUTHOR G. H.

Cascia, a town of Umbria, is in the diocese of Spoleto, as is said at the Life of B. Rita of Cascia, Nun of the Order of Hermits of S. Augustine, on the 22nd of May. In this town besides the monastery of the said Hermits, is also a Convent of the Friars Minor of S. Francis, erected about the year 1247, and its church renewed again in 1324. Fatherland, In this Convent flourished Blessed Pax, sprung from the city of Theate, or (as others prefer) of Reate, and unclothed of this mortal life about the year 1270 on the 7th day of June. His sacred body then with due veneration was buried in the subterranean chapel of the major altar: which afterwards being destroyed, Burial.

was translated to another place of the same church, but hitherto unknown. Only at this time is his image seen in the said church in a certain chapel erected to the honour of St. Charles Borromeo and of this Blessed Pax: Image, as Ludovico Jacobilli, volume 1 on the Saints and Blessed of Umbria, testifies, Chapel, adding moreover these things about his life: This Blessed burned with great zeal in the observance of his Rule, and in all obedience, which he kept with singular study. Obedience For not only to his Superiors, but besides, out of the highest humility, he sought to subject himself and submit his will to others inferior to himself: which greatly pleased the Lord God, with whose cooperation many miracles were worked both in life and after death. Miracles. Thus far Jacobilli. Francesco Gonzaga reckons him among the Blessed of the Seraphic Order, part 1, page 98; Rodolfo of Tossignano, book 1, folio 126; and several others, Title of Blessed. cited by Arturus in the Franciscan Martyrology, in whom these words are read: At Cascia in Umbria, of Blessed Pax, Confessor, notable for virtues and miracles. Wadding makes mention of him at the year 1270, number 27, asserting that he made the Roman province illustrious, and was buried in the place of Cascia in the custody of the Mountains; and at the year 1291, number 66: Of the diocese of Spoleto, he says, in the region of Umbria, the Convent of Cascia, granted to the Brothers, says Rodolfo, in the year 1247; in which Brother Pax, as the Pisan has it, shines with many virtues and miracles.
