MARTYRS FROM THE ISLAND OF CHIOS.

Chios is a great island of Asia, in the Aegean
& Icarian sea near Ionia, of which
at greater length we treated on day XV May, in the
life of S. Isidore, there under Decius
crowned with martyrdom. Hence are said to have been brought,
but it is not added whither, three
likewise Virgins, & slain with the sword, since in the above
cited Ms. Synaxarion, found by us at Dijon,
it is read thus, On the same day, On this same day IX of June,
the holy Martyrs from Chios, virgins, are consummated by the sword. The holy Martyrs from Chios, & those Virgins,
are killed with the sword. Where the preposition ἀπὸ seems to denote the country,
not only the place where they were taken
& whence they were led away to punishment. In the same Ms.
are added these verses:
The three brides of God, whom the sword took, were dyed by the color of blood.
Three brides of Divinity blood painted,
In rosy color, which the sword which gave death.
