Four ancient apographs of the Hieronymian Martyrology begin this day X June with these Martyrs, with these words. At Rome the birthday of Basilides, Aurisus, Rogatus, Januarius, Cassianus, Victurus, Martinus, Davallus, and twenty others. In the second Martyr the writing is various, Some names variously written: namely Aurisi, and with the last letter omitted Auris, and with the letters inverted Ausiri, and with greater discrepancy also Arasi. We prefer the name Aurisus also found in the Mss. of Richenovia, Rhinovia, Florence, of the Monastery of S. Cyriacus, likewise of Cassino and Altempsianum. The name of Davallus is in the Epternach alone, and in the place of Victurus is also read Victor. In the Ms. of the monastery of S. Cyriacus, which Baronius greatly esteemed, it is had thus: At Rome, on the Aurelian Way at the XIII milestone, of Basilides, Aurisus, Rogatus, Januarius, Cassianus. Ms. of the Queen of Sweden At Rome, the number also among various is various. on the Aurelian Way at the XII milestone, the birthday of Saints Basilides and of XXIV others: thus our apograph, but in Holstenius, and of XXVIII others; certainly, including Basilides, so many would there be, namely eight expressed by their own names, and twenty anonymous. Mss. of Richenovia and Rhinovia. At Rome, of Basilides, Aurisus, Rogatus, Basilla. But this pertains to the following day. Ms. of Barberini. At Rome of the soldiers Basilides, Rogatus, Martianus, and of XX others. Which are also read in the Trier Ms. of S. Maximinus, but in place of "soldiers" is had "at the XIII milestone." Mss. of Cassino and Altempsianum; At Rome on the Aurelian Way of Basilides, Aurisus, Rogatus, Cassianus. Cologne of S. Maria ad Gradus; At Rome of SS. Basilidus, Rogatus, Martianus, and of twenty other Martyrs. Ms. of Trier of S. Martin; At Rome of Basilides, Rogatus, with twenty-six others. In the Ms. of Tournai are the names of Rogatus and Victor. In the Ms. of Lætium of Rogatus and Januarius. In the Ms. of Augsburg of Cassianus and Rogatus. But, the arena Rome omitted, are in the Mss. of Florence, the Medicean and Strozzian, the names of Cassianus, Victor, Martinus, Aurisus, Rogatus, and Januarius with 112 others. In another Florentine of the Conventual Minors, it reads thus: The birthday of SS. Basilides, Aurisus, Rogatus, Januarius and of XII others. Likewise of SS. Cassianus Victor, Martinus and of XX others. Another Cassinese mentions of Cassianus, Victorinus, Martinus. Grevenus, of Rogatus, Marcianus, and of XX others. These it pleased to set forth more widely, that the accurate reading of the Hieronymian Martyrology may be proved, set forth in the first place from four ancient apographs: and that this class may be distinguished from S. Basilides to be reported on June XII, who with other Companions on this day is indicated in other Martyrologies, as will be there more widely set forth.
[2] Whether others are to be established as African Martyrs different from these. In the Ms. of Ado of the Queen of Sweden, this is read: In Africa the birthday of S. Aresius. But the Martyrology, supposed under the name of Bede, adds companions, handing down these things: In Africa of Aresius, Rogatus and of XV others. The same Baronius inscribed in today's Roman Martyrology, and in his Notes says: Concerning these also on this day Bede, and the ancient manuscripts agree. We have accurately set forth the ancient Manuscripts; but we read there Rome, not Africa: but the genuine Martyrology of Bede we have found to be vacant on this day: therefore, we dare not collocate them separately; thinking, that he, whom we have given with S. Rogatus, Aurisus, by some Ausirus and Arasus, is here called Aresus, or Aresius; and in place of XX, by an easy error there are joined XV anonymous, and that they are the Roman Martyrs, about whom we treat in this place: which yet may be done without prejudice, if perhaps for Africa a better and more certain authority be brought forward sometime, than that of pseudo-Bede.
