BY THE AUTHOR G. H.
We proceed with the ancient copies of the Hieronymian Martyrology, in which in the fifth place this cohort of Martyrs is produced: & indeed in the most ancient Epternacense in this manner: In Lucania, Inscribed they are found in Lucania, of Vitus, Candidus, Cantianus, Cantionilla, Protus, Crysogonus, Anteon, Quintianus, Theodolus. Which thus in the Lucca copy are proposed. In Lucania, of Nivitus, Candidus, Cantianus, Cantianellus, Protus, Grisogonus, Arteon, Quintianus, Theodolus. With this copy agrees the Blume, except that in it, as also in the Epternacense, Cantianella is written. In the Corbie copy at the end are added the names of Jocundus & Silvius.
[2] In the Mss. of Florence of the Medicean library & of the Strozzi Museum, in 13 ancient Martyrologies; with the Martyrology printed there in the year 1486, thus it is read: In Lucania of the Holy Martyrs Nivitius, Candidus, Cantianus & Cantianilla, Prothierius, Singonus, Antheon, Quintianus, & Theodolus. The Mss. Richenoviense & Rhinoviense: In Lucania, of Vitus,
9Candidus. The Mss. Barberinianum & Trier of S. Maximinus, with Greven in the Auctary of Usuard: In Lucania, of Candidus, Protus, Crysogonus: for which, with the arena omitted, also are brought forth in the Ms. of Prague. Aquisgranense, Ms. In Lucania of Chrysogonus they have: in the Ms. Augsburg of S.
Udalric are the names of Candidus, Misogonus, in place of Chrysogonus & Quintianus. Which names in the Paris Ms. thus are brought out Candidae, Chrysogoni, Quintini. But Quintiani in the Gellonese Ms., where also are Candida & Chrysogonus.
[3] Octavius Cajetanus tome I on the Lives of the Sicilian Saints pg. 123, & sometimes of Sicily. refers many Martyrs of Sicily, of uncertain age or place: & among these, he says, on XVII Kalends of July Novitus, Candidus, Cantianus, Cantianilla, Protus, Chrysogonus, Antheon, Quintianus, & Theodulus, crowned Sicily with their triumphs. Then in his Animadversions he says, that these are handed down as having suffered in Sicily in the Mss. of Syracuse & Messina, then perhaps when Lucania was attributed to Sicily, with the rest of the Neapolitan kingdom: for he confesses, that these Martyrs are placed in Lucania in the Mss. of Cephalœdense & another of Messina, as we above from thirteen Martyrologies have placed them. Following Cajetanus, Ferrarius had attributed the same to Sicily.
[4] Another difficulty occurs, that on the preceding day XIV July are venerated Antheon Martyr of Laodicea, Quintianus & Theodulus Africans, Cantionella in Specia, whether some are venerated on June 14. & Protus at Aquileia: whence it is to be feared, lest perhaps the same, as on other neighboring days others sometimes, are here repeated. But since it is not established to us that they are the same, with this animadversion placed, we leave the same placed in such various Mss. here, as we have found them.
