PRELIMINARY COMMENTARY.

Concerning his cult & most sincere Acts from a Greek Ms.

Tatianus Dulas, Martyr near Zephyrium in Cilicia (S.)

Zephyrium, an ancient city of coastal Cilicia, with a promontory of the same name, from which to opposite Cyprus is a briefer crossing, Greek Acts is mentioned in the Periplus of Scylax, in Livy book 33 ch. 4, in Stephanus of the Cities, & in the ancient Greek Notitia is held Episcopal, whose Bishop Hypatius was present at the Council of Chalcedon. This city, by his martyrdom; & Praetorias, the Prefecture surrounding it by his birth & by the deposition of his body S. Tatianus Dulas illustrated: whose Greek Acts we have found at Rome in a double Ms. codex marked 655 & 1667; Translated into Latin by Sirletus. such as we shall soon give with our Latin version. The same having been rendered into Latin by Guillelmus Sirletus, later Cardinal, Aloysius Lipomanus Bishop of Verona edited in part 2 of tome 7 on the Lives of the Holy Fathers, & from him Laurentius Surius: who both ascribe them to Simeon Metaphrastes, by the common error of that time, by which all Greek Acts of the Saints were attributed to him. Otherwise feels Leo Allatius, who in the Diatribe on the writings of the Simeons pg. 120 near the end, brings forward the beginning of this Life among those Lives, which Metaphrastes did not touch, but others, & often illustrious authors, edited.

[2] These Acts of holy Dulas (for thus without the prenomen Tatianus they are simply inscribed, Martyrdom of the holy Dulas) seem altogether sincere, Cult among the Greeks, & taken from judicial writings almost word for word. Certainly nothing in them dost thou read of those paradoxes, which everywhere are read in Passions of later time & note. From them however have been taken, what in all the Synaxaria of the Greeks are extant Encomia: for instance in the ancient Menology of Emperor Basil Porphyrogenitus, in a very ancient Ms. Synaxarion of the Church of Constantinople, which we used long, by the favor of our Parisian Louis-the-Great College, to whom we finally restored it. The same elogia we found in a double codex of the Milan Ambrosian Library, double also Parisian of the Mazarine Library, & in the Mss. of the Dominican Fathers in the same place, & Latin ones. & of our Dijon college of the Society of Jesus. The same are extant in Greek in the printed Menaea, whence some encomium was formed by the above-praised Sirletus: which being cited, with the Acts edited by Lipomanus & Surius, Baronius inscribed the same Saint into the Roman Martyrology in these words: At Zephyrium in Cilicia of the holy Martyr Dulas, who under the President Maximus for the name of Christ beaten with rods, [3] placed on a grate, burned with boiling oil, & having suffered other things, received the palm of martyrdom as victor. The same were referred by Molanus & Galesinius.

[3] The time of his life & martyrdom is nowhere indicated, nor from the name of the President Maximus alone can we obtain it; Time of Martyrdom: since even in this our work several of this name occur under various Emperors, Prefects, Dukes, Consuls, & later Proconsuls in different Provinces. Thus we said S. Anterus the Pope under Maximus Prefect of Rome in the year CCXXXVI was crowned by martyrdom, on his birthday III January: Indeed even Clement Bishop of Ancyra, & various companions of his, was tortured by Maximus the President with various torments, & at length about the beginning of the fourth century killed as a Martyr, the ancient Acts of his have, illustrated by us on day XXIII January; to the same time however we judge the martyrdom of S. Tatianus Dulas could also be placed. We subjoin in confirmation of the Acts, an Elogium from the said Ms. Synaxarion of Constantinople & the great Menaea, in which also this Distich is premised.

Δουλᾶς ξοάνοις δουλικὸν μὴ δοὺς σέβας, Ἤνεγκε σαρκὸς, ὡς Θεοῦ δοῦλος, ξέσεις.

Dulas refusing to give servile veneration to idols, Bore the scrapings of the flesh, as the servant of God.

where you see allusion is made to the name Δουλᾶς, of common origin with Δοῦλος, servant. The elogium itself is of this kind:

[4] Οὗτος ἦν ἐκ Ζεφυρίου Πραιτωριάδος, ἐπαρχίας τῆς Κιλικίας· διὰ δὲ τὸ τὸν Χριστὸν σέβειν καὶ προσκυνεῖν, Synopsis of the Martyrdom, ἤχθη πρὸς τὸν Ἡγεμόνα Μάξιμον, καὶ τύπτεται ῥάβδοις. Ἄχθεὶς δὲ εἶς τρίτην ἐξέτασιν, καὶ τῶν εἰδωλοθύτων ἀναγκασόμενος ἀπογεύσασθαι, ὡς ἑκὼν οὐχ ὑπήκουεν, ἀλλὰ τὴν ἐπενεχθεῖσαν βίᾳ σπονδὴν τῷ αὐτοῦ στόματι ἀπέπτυσεν, ἀναρθὲς ξέεται ἐπὶ τοσοῦτον, ὥστε τῶν παρειῶν αὐτῷ γυμνωθῆναι, καὶ τὰ ἔγκατα προσελθεῖν. Εἶτα ἐλασθεὶς ἕως εἰκοστοῦ μηλίου, τῷ Θεῷ τὸ πνεῦμα παρέδωκεν.

[5] He from Zephyrium of Praetorias, prefecture of Cilicia, was sprung, on account of the faith & worship of Christ led to the President Maximus, was beaten with rods, from the Menaea, And when he derided the fables about Apollo & Daphne, whom he loving pursued in flight, nor however to satisfy his desire could he attain; he more inflamed the fury of the President. Again therefore he is beaten about the belly, & stretched on a burning grate. Then led to another questioning, his head is poured over with burning oil, & burning coals are heaped upon it, & his wounds are rubbed with vinegar & shells, & mustard is instilled into his nostrils, & his back is scraped with iron nails, & his jaws & the bones of his feet are crushed. But asked by the President about Christ, how he is reckoned God in the flesh, he explained all the mysteries of our religion. Led at length to a third questioning, & compelled to taste of idol-offerings: to him refusing libations are thrust by force into his mouth, which he soon spat out. Suspended for this reason again, at the twentieth milestone, he rendered his spirit to God.

[1] Ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, ὅτε ὁ σατανᾶς ὑπὸ τῶν ἀξίων αὐτοῦ εὐοχεῖτο, καὶ ἐκράτη ἡ πλάνη τῆς εἰδωλολατρείας, Μαξίμου ἡγεμονεύοντος ἐν τῇ χώρᾳ τῆς Κιλικίας, ὑπεβλήθη αὐτῷ Τατιανὸς, ὀνόματι Δουλᾶς, ἀνὴρ δίκαιος καὶ φοβούμενος τὸν Θεὸν, μαρτυρούμενος δὲ ὑπὸ παντὸς ἔθνους εἶναι εὐσεβης καὶ κατὰ πάντα δίκαιος. Οὗτος ὑπεβλήθη τῷ Ἡγεμόνι, ὡς θρησκεύοντος αὐτοῦ τὴν εἰς Χριστὸν ὁμολογίαν. Μάξιμος Ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν· Περιπολίζοντός μου τὰς πόλεις, πάντας τοὺς δεσμώτας εἰσαγαγεῖν κελεύω. Εἰσελθῷν οὖν εἰς τὴν πόλιν, καὶ προκαθίσας ἐπὶ τοῦ βήματος, ἐκέλευσαν πρῶτον προσαχθῆναι τῆς Δουλᾶ.

In that time, when Satan was being feasted by those worthy of him, & the error of idolatry was prevailing, with Maximus governing in the region of Cilicia, there was brought before him Tatianus, by name Dulas, a just man & fearing God, attested by every nation to be pious & in all things just. This one was brought before the President, as practicing his confession in Christ. He was therefore held in custody, with the Commentariensis reporting to the President thus: According to the command of thy virtue, Lord, having tracked down, even to the city of the Zephyrites, the chief brigands, we found one as being of the most impious religion of the Christians, whom we have presented to thy pure & most-resplendent tribunal. Maximus the President said: As I make the rounds of the cities, I command all the prisoners to be brought in. Therefore entering the city, & sitting down on the tribunal, they ordered Dulas first to be brought forward.

Εἰσερχόμενος δὲ αὐτὸς, προσηύξατο λέγων, Χριστὲ, υἱὲ τοῦ Θεοῦ εὔσπλαχνε, σὺ εἶπας διὰ στόματος Δαυὶδ λέγων, Πλάτυνον τὸ στόμα σου, καὶ [4] πληρώσω αὐτό· καὶ αὐτὸς εἶπας διὰ τῶν εὐαγγελίων, Μὴ μεριμνήσητε πῶς, ἢ τί λαλὴσητε. Νῦν οὖν, δέσποτα Χριστὲ, ἐξαπόστειλον τὸν Ἄγγελόν σου, καὶ δός μοι λόγον, ἐν ἀνοίξει τοῦ στόματός μου, ἵνα εἰσελθὼν πρός τὸν μιορώτατον Μάξιμον, ἐλέγξω αὐτὸν ἀσεβοῦντα· ἕνεκα δὲ πληγῶν σε ἕχω πρὸ ὀφθαλμῶν, οὐ φοβοῦμαι τὰς τιμωρίας αὐτοῦ, τὸ γὰρ σῶμά μου πρόκειται αὐτῷ· ἐὰν γὰρ μὴ παραδῶ τὸ σῶμά μου ἵνα καυθῶ, ποίων ἀγαθῶν στεφάνους ἔχω ὑποδέξασθαι; ποίους δὲ μώλοπας ἔχω ὑποδεῖξαι τῷ δεσπότῃ μου Χριστῷ, ἵνα ἐπειδών με φιλανθρωπεύσηταί μοι ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν;.

And entering, he prayed saying, Christ, son of the compassionate God, thou hast said through the mouth of David saying, Open wide thy mouth, & I will fill it; & thou thyself hast said through the gospels, Be not anxious how, or what ye shall speak. Now therefore, master Christ, send forth thy Angel, & give me speech, in the opening of my mouth, that entering before the most impure Maximus, I may convict him of impiety; & on account of the wounds I have thee before my eyes, I do not fear his punishments, for my body lies before him; for if I do not deliver my body that I may be burnt, what crowns of good things have I to receive? What welts have I to show to my master Christ, that when he shall act mercifully to me with remission of sins?

[2] Ταῦτα αὐτῳ λέγοντος, περιελόντες αὐτῷ τὸ παλλίον, καὶ περιζώσαντες αὐτὸν, παρέστησαν τῷ Ἡγεμόνι. Μάξιμος Ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν· Τίς καλεῖ τὸ ὅνομά σου, φράσον συντόμως; Δουλᾶς εἷπεν· Δοῦλος Χριστοῦ. Μάξιμος Ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν, Μηδὲν ὠφελούμενος ἐκ τοῦ ονὁματος τούτου, τὸ φύσικόν σου ὄνομα, φράσον ἡμῖν. Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Ἀνόητε, δῆλόν σοι ἐποίησα τὸ ὄνομά μου, τὸ μὲν φύσικόν μου ὄνομα Τατιανός εἰμι, τὸ δὲ ἐπικληθέν μοι Δουλᾶς· ὅθεν οὕτως προσαγορευόμενος, κατὰ ἀλήθειαν δοῦλός εἰμι Χριστοῦ. Μάξιμος Ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν· Οὐδέπω ἔγνως τὸν φόβον τοῦ δικαστηρίου· νῦν οὖν λέγε μοι, ποίου ἔθνους τυγχάνεις, ποίας δὲ κώμης, ποίου δὲ γένους; Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Ἕθνους μὲν εἰμὶ Κιλίκων, κώμης δὲ Πραιτοριάδος, γένους δὲ τῶν εὐγενῶν, ἀπὸ παιδὸς Χριστιανός. Μάξιμος Ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν, ὡς οὖν εὐγενὴς, ἧξον τοῖς ἀηττήτοις Βασιλεῦσι, καὶ προσελθὼν θύσον τοῖς θεοῖς, ἵνα καὶ παρ᾽ ἡμῶν τιμεῖς, καὶ παρὰ τοῖς σεβαστοῖς μέγας ἀναφανεῖς. Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Ἡ τιμή σου καὶ ἠ προκοπὴ τῶν σεβαστῶν σου ὑμῖν ἔσται, καὶ πᾶσι τοῖς μὴ γινώσκουσι τὸν Θεὸν· ἐμοὶ δὲ μὴ γένοιτο προκόπτειν εἰ μὴ ἐν τῇ πίστει τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοὖ Χριστοῦ.

While he was saying these things, they stripped off his cloak, & having girded him, they presented him to the President. Maximus the President said: What does one call thy name, tell briefly? Dulas said: Servant of Christ. Maximus the President said, Profiting nothing from that name, thy natural name, tell us. Dulas said: Foolish one, I have made my name plain to thee, my natural name is Tatianus, but the surname for me is Dulas; whence so being called, in truth I am a servant of Christ. Maximus the President said: Not yet hast thou known the fear of the tribunal; now therefore say to me, of what nation art thou, of what village, of what race? Dulas said: Of nation I am of the Cilicians, of village Praetorias, of race of the noble, from a child a Christian. Maximus the President said, As therefore noble, render homage to the unconquered Emperors, & coming forward sacrifice to the gods, that both from us thou mayest be honored, & before the augusts mayest appear great. Dulas said: Thy honor & the advancement of thy augusts shall be for you, & for all who do not know God; but for me may it not be to advance except in the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ.

[3] Μάξιμος Ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν· Τείναντες αὐτὸν ξυλοβάκλοις τύπτετε αὐτὸν, λέγοντες αὐτῷ, Μὴ μωρίᾳ χρῶ. Δούλᾶς εἶπεν· Εὐχαριστῶ σοι Χριστὲ, ὅτι κατηξιώθην διὰ τὸ ὄνομά σου ταῦτα πάσχειν. Μάξιμος Ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν· Νῦν τί σε ὀφελεῖ ὁ Χριστός σου, ὅτι ὅλος εἶ τετραυματισμένος, καὶ ὀυκ αἰσθάνη, ἀνόητε. Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Οὐκ ἤκουσας τοῦ μακαρίου Παύλου λέγοντος, ὅτι ἐὰν μὴ νομίμως ἀθλήσει, οὐδεὶς στεφανοῦται; Μὰξιμος ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν, Οὐκοῦν τυπτόμενος, στεφανοῦσαι. Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Σήμερον ἐγὼ ἀγωνιζομαι κατὰ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου τοῦ διαβόλου· ἐὰν οὖν νικήσω τὴν πανοπλίαν τοῦ σατανᾶ, λέγω δὲ σὲ τὸν ὑπηρέτην αὐτοῦ, στεφανοῦμαι ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς. Μάξιμος εἶπεν· Τί πλανᾶσαι, ἀνθρώπῳ σταυρωθέντι πιστεύων; Δουλᾶς

Maximus the President said: Stretching him out beat him with wooden cudgels, saying to him, Make not use of folly. Dulas said: I give thanks to thee, Christ, that I have been counted worthy through thy name to suffer these things. Maximus the President said: Now what does thy Christ profit thee, that thou art wholly wounded, & dost not feel it, foolish one. Dulas said: Hast thou not heard blessed Paul saying, that unless one shall contend lawfully, none is crowned? Maximus the President said, Therefore being beaten, thou art crowned. Dulas said: Today I am contending against thy brother the devil; if therefore I shall conquer the panoply of Satan, & I say thee his servant, I shall be crowned in the heavens. Maximus said: Why art thou deceived, believing in a man crucified? Dulas

Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Τί βέλτιόν ἐστιν, ἀνθρώπῳ σταυρωθέντι πιστεύειν, ἤ λίθοις καὶ ξυλοις, ἔργοις χειρῶν ἀνθρώπων πιστεύειν, ἢ Θεῷ ζῶντι καὶ άληθεινῷ;

Dulas said: What is better, to believe in a man crucified, or to believe in stones & woods, works of men's hands, or in the living & true God?

[4] Μάξιμος εἶπεν· Τρισκαθάρετε, ὁ μέγας Θεὸς Ἀπόλλων, ἔργον ἔστιν ἀνθρώπων; Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Καλῶς αὐτὸν εἴρηκας Απώλλωνα· προσέχων γὰρ αὐτῷ, ἀπώλεσας τὴν σεαυτοῦ ψυχὴν, οὐ μόνον δὲ τὴν σεαυτοῦ, ἀλλὰ καὶ οὕς ἀναγκάζων πεῖθεις προσκυνεῖν αὐτῷ. Γίνωσκε δὲ ὅτι ὁ Θεὸς ἐκ τῆς χειρὸς σου ἐκζητῆσαι ἔχει ψυχὰς, ἅσπερ ἀναγκάζων ἀπώλεσας. Περὶ δὲ τοῦ ἀσεβοῦς Ἀπόλλωνος λέξω σοι, ὁποῖος ἦν. Οὗτος ἦν ὡς καὶ σὺ ἄσωτος, καὶ ἐφίλησε τὴν Δάφνήν, χρήματα δοὺς οὐκ ὀλίγα· καὶ ἐπαγγελίας λαβὼν, οὐκ ἐπέτυχε. Ποῖος οὗτος Θεὸς, εἰς ἔρωτα τρωθεὶς, καὶ μὴ ἐπιτυχὼν τῆς ἐρωμένης; πῶς αὐτὸς ἀξιώσας [5] αὐτὸν ἐπιτυχεῖν, ἀληθῶς γὰρ γέλωτος ἄξια τὰ παρ᾽ ὑμῶν ἀδόμενα, μᾶλλον δὲ θρήνους ἄξια ὄντα· ὃν γὰρ γυνὴ πόρνη, μυσαρὰ, καὶ ἐνεγὴς, καὶ πάσης δυσωδιας πεπληρωμένη, ἐξουδένωσε τὸν Ἀπόλλωνά σου, ἐμπτύσασα αὐτῷ εἰς τὸ πρόσωπον, σὺ ὡς Θεον αὐτὸν προσκυνεῖς; Ὁρᾶς ὅτι πένθους ἄξια τὰ τῆς ὑμετέρας δυσσεβείας.

[4] Maximus said: Thrice-accursed one, is the great God Apollo a work of men? Dulas said: Well hast thou called him Apollon (Destroyer): for attending to him, thou hast destroyed thy own soul, & not only thine own, but also those whom by compelling thou persuadest to worship him. Know that God will demand from thy hand the souls, which by compelling thou hast destroyed. About impious Apollo I shall tell thee, of what sort he was. He was, like thee, dissolute, & loved Daphne, giving no little money; & having received promises, did not obtain her. What kind of God is this, wounded by love, & not obtaining his beloved? How did he himself, deeming [5] himself worthy to obtain her — for truly worthy of laughter are the things sung by you, rather worthy of lamentation; for him whom a harlot woman, abominable, & wretched, & filled with all stench, despised thy Apollo, spitting in his face, thou dost worship him as God? Thou seest that the things of your impiety are worthy of mourning.

[5] Μάξιμος Ἡγεμών εἶπεν· Στρέψαντες αὐτὸν τοῖς ξυλοβάκλοις, κατὰ τῆς γαστρὸς τύπτετε. Ἀθανάσιος Κορνικουλάριος εἶπεν, πρόσθητι τῷ Ὑπατικῷ, οὖκ ὀρᾶς ὅτι τὰ κόπρεα τῶν ἐντέρων σου προπηδῶσιν; Δουλᾶς εἶπεν. Σύμβουλε τοῦ σατανᾶ, ὐπηρέτα τοῦ διαβόλου, συμβούλευσον σεαυτῷ, καὶ τῷ Ἄρχοντί σου, πῶς δυνηθείτε πεῖσαι τὴν Δάφνην συγγενέσθαι τῷ θεῷ ὑμῶν Ἀπόλλωνι, ἵνα μὴ τῷ ἔρωτι τρωθεὶς ἀπώληται· ἐγὼ γὰρ ἔχω τὸν σύμβουλόν μου τὸν Κύριόν μου Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν. Μάξιμος Ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν, Δότε ἐσχάραν, καὶ ἐκκαύσαντες αὐτὴν σφοδρῶς· ἐπίθετι τὸν τρισκατάρατον ὡς βλασφημοῦντα εἰς τοὺς θεούς. Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Χάριν σοι ὁμολογεῖ ὁ Ἀπόλλων ἐν τῇ γεέννῃ, ὅτι προνοεῖς αὐτῷ πῦρ ἄσβεστον· κᾀκεῖνος δὲ παρέχει σοι ἀντιχάριν, ὅτι κοινῇ ἔχετε ἀπελθεῖν εἰς τὸ σκότος το ἐξώτερον· καὶ τότε σοι ἔχω ἐπιγελᾶσαι, προστᾶτα τοῦ ἀσεβοὐς Ἀπόλλωνος.

[5] Maximus the President said: Turning him over with the wooden cudgels, beat him on the belly. Athanasius the Cornicularius said, agree with the Consularis, dost thou not see that the dung of thy entrails leaps out? Dulas said. Counsellor of Satan, servant of the devil, give counsel to thyself, & to thy Ruler, how ye could persuade Daphne to consort with your god Apollo, that he may not perish wounded by love; for I have my Counsellor my Lord Jesus Christ. Maximus the President said, Give a grate, & kindling it strongly; place upon it the thrice-cursed one as blaspheming against the gods. Dulas said: Apollo confesses thanks to thee in Gehenna, that thou providest for him unquenchable fire; & he too gives thee a return-favor, that in common ye are to depart into the outer darkness; & then I shall laugh at thee, protector of impious Apollo.

[6] Καύσαντες δὲ ὅλον τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ διὰ τῆς ἐσχάρας, ούδὲν ἤνυσαν· οὐ γὰρ ἔπεισαν τὸν δοῦλον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀποστῆναι τῆς εις αὐτὸν πίστεως. Μάξιμος Ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν· Κεκαυστηριασμένον τοῦτὸν ἐν ἀσφαλῇ φρουρᾷ φυλάττετε, ἐν τῇ ἐσωτέρᾳ φυλακῇ, μηδεμιᾶς ἐπιμελείας τυγχάνοντα· μή τις τῶν ἀσεβεστάτων μακαρίσει αὐτὸν, ἐφ᾽ οἷς ἀσεβῶς εἰς τούς θεοὺς ὑπομεμένηκεν. Καὶ ἦν ὁ Ἅγιος ἐπὶ τῶν δεσμῶν, ἀδιαλείπτως δοξάζων τὸν Θεὸν, ὥστε τελειωθῆναι αὐτοῦ τὸν δρόμον.

[6] But burning his whole body by the grate, they accomplished nothing; for they did not persuade the servant of God to depart from his faith in him. Maximus the President said: Keep this branded man in secure custody, in the inner prison, receiving no care; lest some of the most impious bless him, on account of what he has impiously endured for the gods. And the Saint was in the bonds, unceasingly glorifying God, that his course might be completed.

[7] Καὶ μετὰ ἡμέρας πέντε, ἐπιβας τῇ πόλει ὁ Μάξιμος, καθίσας ἐπὶ τοῦ βήματος εἶπεν· Εἰ ἔτι ζῆ ὁ ἀνοσιώτατος ἐκεῖνος, ὁ τῆς ἀσεβεστάτης θρησκείας τῶν Χριστιανῶν, τοῦτον ἐπὶ τοῦ βήματος κάλει. Ἀθανασιος Κορνικουλάριος εἶπεν· Μὰ τὴν σὴν ἀρετήν! τοσοῦτον οὖτος εὐτονώτερός ἐστιν πρὸς ἀπολογιαν, ὅτι οὐδὲ μώλοπά τινα ἔσχηκεν ἐν τῷ σώματι αὐτοῦ. Καὶ ἐκέλευσεν αὐτὸν εἰσαχθῆναι. Ἱδὼν δὲ αὐτὸν ὁ Ἡγεμὼν, ὅλον ὑγιῆ καὶ χάριτος πεπληρωμένον τῷ προσώπῳ, εἶπεν· Ὦ ἀνοσία τάξις, οῦ πᾳρήγγειλα ὑμῖν μηδεμιᾶς αὐτὸν ἐπιμελείας τυχεῖν; Πηγάσιος Κομενταρήσιος εἶπεν· Μὰ τὸ σὸν μέγεθος, εἰς τὴν ἐσωτέραν φυλακὴν κατείχετο, κατὰ τοῦ τραχήλου τὸν Ἡρακλέα ἔχων λιτρῷν τ᾽· πῶς δὲ ὑγιὴς γέγονεν, οὐδεὶς, ἡμῶν οἶδεν, δέομαί σου. Δουλᾶς τῶ Ἡγεμόνι εἶπεν· Ἀσύνετε ὁ Χριστός μου, ὑγιῆ με ποιήσας, προηυτρέπισέ μου τὸ σῶμα πρὸς ὑποδοχὴν τῶν αἰκισμῶν σου, ἵνα γνῶς ὅτι ὁ ἡμέτερος ἰατρὸς ἀοράτως θεραπεύει τοὺς ἐλπίζοντας εἰς αὐτὸν, ἄμα μὲν ἵνα ἐγὼ διπλοῦν λάβω τὸν τοῦ μαρτυρίου στέφανον, σὺ δὲ διπλῆν τὴν αἰώνιον κόλασιν. Εἰ δ᾽ αὐτὸς τοι ούτους αἰκισμοὺς ὑπέστῃς εἰς ὄνομα τοῦ Ἀπόλλωνος, ἄρα εἰ δυνατόν σοι παρασχεῖν τὴν ὑγίαν ὁ Ἀπόλλων, ὅν λέγεις Θεόν σου, ὥσπερ ἐμοὶ ὁ Χριστός.

[7] And after five days, Maximus entering the city, sitting on the tribunal said: If that most unholy one still lives, of the most impious religion of the Christians, call him to the tribunal. Athanasius the Cornicularius said: By thy virtue! this man is so much stronger for defense, that he has not even any weal in his body. And he ordered him to be brought in. But the President seeing him, wholly sound & with face filled with grace, said: O unholy order, did I not enjoin you that he receive no care? Pegasius the Commentariensis said: By thy greatness, he was held in the inner prison, having around his neck a Hercules-weight of three hundred pounds; but how he became sound, none of us knows, I beg thee. Dulas said to the President: Foolish one, my Christ, having made me sound, prepared my body for the reception of thy torments, that thou mayest know that our physician invisibly heals those who hope in him, both that I may receive a double crown of martyrdom, & thou a double eternal punishment. But if thou hadst endured such tortures in the name of Apollo, would Apollo, whom thou callest thy God, be able to provide thee health, as Christ does to me?

[8] Μάξιμος Ἠγεμὼν εἶπεν· Ἐπειδὴ οὐ παύεται τῆς κατὰ τῶν θεῶν βλασφημίας, ἀλείφαντες ἐλαίῳ τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ, ἄνθρακας ἐκκεκαυμένους ἐπίθετε. Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Εἰ δὲ καὶ τὸν ἐγκέφαλόν μου ἐκαυτηρίασας λοιπὸν τί ποιήσεις δυσσεβέστατε, ἐπινόει ἔτερα βασανιστήρια. Μάξιμος Ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν· Σίνηπι ἐκχέατε κατὰ [6] τῶν μυκτήρων αὐτοῦ, Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Καταπαίζω τῶν βασάνων σου, Μάξιμος Ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν, Σιδήροις ὀξέσιν τὸν νῶτον αὐτοῦ εὐτόνως χαράξατε, καὶ ὄξει δριμυτάτῳ διαράνατε εἰς τὰς πληγὰς αὐτοῦ, καὶ ὀστράκοις τὸν νῶτον αὐτοῦ τρίψατε. Γινομένων δὲ τούτων, ὁ Ἅγιος ἔλεγεν· Χριστὲ, παράστα τῷ δούλῳ σου· ἰδοὺ γὰρ ἐπὶ τὸν νῶτόν μου τεκταίνουσιν οἱ ἁμαρτωλοὶ, μακρύνοντες τὴν ἀνομίαν αὐτῶν· Μάξιμος Ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν. Κᾄν νὐν πείθῃ, ἀνόητε, καὶ ὁμολόγεῖς εἶναι θεούς; Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Οἱ θεοί σου συνεργοῦσίν σοι καὶ τῇ κακίᾳ, μάλιστα ἡ Ἀφροδίτη καὶ ἡ Ἄρτεμις, εἰ δε κελεύεις, λέγω καὶ τὰς λοιπὰς θεάς σου, καὶ τὰς τούτων πράξεις. Μάξιμος εἴπεν· Σύνθλάσατε λίθῳ τὰς σιαγῶνας αὐτοῦ, ἵνα μὴ βλασφημῇ τοὺς θεοὺς, καὶ βάκλῳ τὰ σκέλη αὐτοῦ συνκλάσατε, καὶ ποιήσατε αὐτὸν ἄπειρον πρὸς τὸ μὴ φθέγγεαθαι.

[8] Maximus the President said: Since he ceases not from blasphemy against the gods, anointing his head with oil, place burning coals upon it. Dulas said: But even if thou cauterizest my brain finally, what wilt thou do, most impious one, devise other torments. Maximus the President said: Pour mustard into his nostrils. Dulas said: I mock thy torments. Maximus the President said, With sharp irons scrape his back vigorously, & with sharpest vinegar pour into his wounds, & with shells rub his back. While these things were being done, the Saint said: Christ, stand by thy servant; for behold upon my back the sinners are building, prolonging their iniquity. Maximus the President said. Even now art thou persuaded, foolish one, & confessest there to be gods? Dulas said: Thy gods cooperate with thee & with wickedness, especially Aphrodite & Artemis, & if thou commandest, I shall name also the rest of thy goddesses, & their deeds. Maximus said: Crush his jaws with a stone, that he blaspheme not the gods, & with a cudgel break his legs, & make him incapable of speaking.

[9] Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Παρανομώτατε, τύπτεις με τὰ ἀληθῆ λέγοντα, ὅτι ἡ Ἀφροδίτη, καὶ αἱ λοιπαὶ θεαί σου γυμνάζουσαι τὰ ἑαυτῶν μέλη, ποία αὐτῶν μᾶλλον πορνεύουσι, καὶ κριτὴν ἔστησαν τὸν Πάριν ἄνδρα ποιμένα, βουλομέναι δοκιμᾶσαι ποία αὐτῶν βελτίω ἁμαρτάνει; τί οὖν χολᾶς ἐλεγχόμενος τὰς πράξεις τῶν μιαρῶν σου θεῶν, ὁ δὲ ἑμὸς Θεὸς ἀληθινός ἐστιν, καὶ εὐδόκησεν ἄνθρωπος γενέσθαι, καὶ σταυρωθεὶς καὶ ταφεὶς, ἀνέστῃ ἡμέρᾳ, καὶ ἔστιν ἐν δεξιᾷ τοῦ Πατρὸς, καὶ μέλλει ἐν πυρὶ ἔρχεσθαι ἀπωλέσαι καὶ τοὺς θεούς σου. Μάξιμος εἶπεν· Ἀνόσιε, ἴδε καὶ σὺ δεῖ θεοὺς ἔχεις. Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Μὴ σολοίκιζε, λέγων δύο Θεοὺς, Τριὰς γὰρ ἐστιν. Μάξιμος εἶπεν· Οὐκοῦν τρεῖς θεοὺς ἔχεις; Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Τριάδα ὁμολογῶν, προκυνῶ· πιστεύω εἰς Πατέρα, ὁμολογῶ τὸν Ὑιὸν, προσκυνῶ τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον. Μάξιμος Ἡγεμῶν εἶπεν· Πεῖσόν με, πῶς εἰς ἕνα Θεὸν πιστεύων, τρεῖς κηρύσσεις.

[9] Dulas said: Most lawless one, thou beatest me for speaking the truths, that Aphrodite, & the rest of thy goddesses exposing their own members, which of them rather fornicates, & set up the man Paris as judge a shepherd, wishing to test which of them sins better? Why then art thou bilious, being convicted of the deeds of thy foul gods, but my God is true, & deigned to become man, & being crucified & buried, rose on a day, & is at the right hand of the Father, & is about to come in fire to destroy also thy gods. Maximus said: Unholy one, behold thou also must have gods. Dulas said: Solecize not, saying two Gods, for it is a Trinity. Maximus said: Therefore thou hast three gods? Dulas said: Confessing the Trinity, I worship; I believe in the Father, I confess the Son, I worship the Holy Spirit. Maximus the President said: Persuade me, how believing in one God, thou preachest three.

[10] Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Σαρκικὸς ἄνθρωπος οὐ δέχεται τὰ τοῦ πνεύματος, πλὴν διὰ τοὺς παρεστῶτας λέγω· Ὥσπερ σὺ ἄνθρωπος ἔχεις λόγον, οὕτως καὶ ὁ Θεὸς, ὁ Πατὴρ ὁ παντοκράτωρ, ἔχει Λόγον τὸν ὁμοούσιον, καὶ τὸ Πνεῦμα αὐτοῦ τὸ πανάγιον· οὕτως ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν ἐν ἀρχῇ πλάσας τὸν ἄνθρωπον, καὶ τῇ εἰκόνι αὐτοῦ τιμήσας αὐτὸν, ἐνέπνευσεν αὐτῷ πνεῦμα ζωῆς, καὶ ἦν ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ. Ἐπεὶ οὖν ὁ σατανᾶς, ὁ νῦν ἐνεργῶν σοι, βουλόμενος ἐν παραβάσει ποιῆσαι τὸν ἄνθρωπον, ὡς καὶ σὲ νῦν ἐποίησεν, ἐξέωσεν αὐτὸν τῶν ἐντολῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ· ἠθέλησεν ὁ Θεὸς ἀναστῆσαι τὸ πεπτωκὸς πλάσμα, καὶ ἀνακαλέσασθαι τὸ πεπλανημένον, καὶ ἐξαπέστειλον τὸν Υιὸν αὐτοῦ τὸν ἑαυτοῦ Λόγον, καὶ ἐνοίκησεν ἐν τῇ ἁγίᾳ παρθένῳ ὁ Λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ ἐτέχθη ἐξ αὐτῆς, δι᾽ οὗ καὶ ἔσωσεν τὸν κόσμον ὁ Πατὴρ. Μάξιμος εἶπεν· Ὁ Λόγος οὖν ἄνδρα γεννᾶ; Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Οὐ νοεῖς τὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ μυστήριον· εἰ γὰρ ἐγίνωσκες τὸ παντοδύναμον τοῦ Θεοῦ, εἶχες γνῶναι ὅτι ὁ τὸν χοῦν ἄνθρωπον ποίησας, ὀ ἐδράσας τὴν γῆν ἐπὶ τῶν ὑδάτων, ὁ στερεώσας τὸν οὐρανὸν, ὀ ποιήσας πᾶσαν τὴν κτίσιν, αὐτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστὁς. Διὰ γὰρ τὸν μὴ φέρειν τὸν ἄνθρωπον όρᾷν τὴν θεότητα, διὰ πολλῆς φιλανθρωπίας ὁ φιλάνθρωπος, ἄνθρωπος γέγονεν, καὶ ἀνέλαβεν ἀνθρωπίνην ταπείνωσιν, ἵνα, ὡς δι᾽ ἑνὸς ἀνθρώπου τοῦ πρωτοπλάστου ὁ θάνατος εἰς τὸν κόσμον εἰσῆλθεν, οὕτως καὶ δι᾽ ἑνὸς ᾀνθρώπου τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἡ ἀνάστασις γένηται ἡ ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν.

[10] Dulas said: The fleshly man does not receive the things of the spirit, but for the bystanders I say: Just as thou as a man hast reason, so also God, the Father almighty, has the Word consubstantial, & his all-holy Spirit; thus our God in the beginning shaping man, & honoring him with his image, breathed into him the breath of life, & he was in paradise. Since therefore Satan, who now works in thee, wishing to make man in transgression, as he has also now made thee, expelled him from the commandments of God; God willed to raise up the fallen creature, & to recall the one led astray, & sent forth his Son his own Word, & the Word of God dwelt in the holy virgin, & was born of her, through whom also the Father saved the world. Maximus said: The Word therefore begets a man? Dulas said: Thou understandest not the mystery of God; for if thou knewest the omnipotence of God, thou wouldst know that he who made man of dust, who set the earth upon the waters, who established the heaven, who made all creation, he himself is Christ. For because man could not bear to look upon divinity, through great love of man the lover of man became a man, & assumed human humility, that, as through one man the first-formed death entered into the world, so also through one man our Lord Jesus Christ the resurrection from the dead might come about.

[11] Ὁ Ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν· Ἔστι γὰρ ἀνάστασις νεκρῶν; Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Ναὶ ἔστιν, ἐπεὶ πῶς κρινεῖ [7] ὁ Θεὸς τὸν κόσμον; Μάξιμος Ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν· Μή μοι τέχνας λόγων εἰσηγοῦ, ἀφῆς γὰρ ἐὰν ἀποθάνωμεν, νεκροὶ κείμεθα. Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Ἄληθῶς καλῶς εἴρηκας, ὅτι νεκροί ἐστε· ἐπειδὴ γὰρ νεκροῖς εἰδώλοις πιστεύετε, οὐκ ἔρχεσθε εἰς ἀνάστασιν ζωῆς, ἀλλ᾽ εἰς αἰσχύνην καὶ κόλασιν αἰώνιον· δεῖ γὰρ πάντα ἀνθρωπον παραστῆναι τῷ βήματι τοῦ Χριστοῦ, καὶ λόγον δοῦναι καθ᾽ ἅ ἔπραξεν.

[11] The President said: Is there indeed a resurrection of the dead? Dulas said: Yes there is, since how shall God judge the world? Maximus the President said: Bring not to me arts of words, for after we die, we lie dead. Dulas said: Truly well hast thou said, that ye are dead; for since ye believe in dead idols, ye come not to the resurrection of life, but to shame & eternal punishment; for every man must stand before the tribunal of Christ, & give an account according to what he has done.

[12] Μάξιμος Ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν· Ἀσφαλισάμενοι αὐτὸν σιδήροις, ἐν τῇ φρουρᾷ φυλάττετε. Προκαθίσας τῇ έωθεν ὁ Ἡγεμὼν, ἐκέλευσεν εἰσεχθῆναι τὸν δοῦλον τοῦ θεοῦ Δουλᾶν. Εἴσαχθέντος δὲ αὐτοῦ, Μάξιμος Ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν· Τί ὠφέλησας, τρισάθλιε, ἀσεβῶν εἰς τοὺς θεούς; Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Κέρδος οὐ μικρόν ἐστιν εἰς Θεὸν, ἀθετεῖν τοὺς μὴ ὄντας θεοὺς, σὲ δὲ καὶ ζὤντα τιμωρήσεται ὁ Χριστός. Μάξιμος Ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν· Ἐγχέατε αὐτῷ κρέα τῶν θυσιῶν, καὶ οἶνον αὐτῶν σπονδῶν. Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Εἰ καὶ ὅλον τὸν μιαρόν σου βωμὸν ἀποπλύνας ἐγχέῃς μοι, οὐδὲν ἀδικήσεις τὸν δοῦλον τοῦ Χριστοῦ. Μάξιμος Ἡγεμὼν εῖπεν· Ἴδε καὶ τῶν βωμῶν ἀπογεύσω, ἀνόσιε. Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Ἐμὲ ταύτα οὐδὲν βλάψει, μιαρὲ καὶ ἀναίσθητε· ἐπεὶ ἄρα διὰ τί ἐκέρδανόν σου τὰς προτέρας σου βασάνους, σὺ ὄψει μετὰ Θεοῦ ὃ ποιεῖς· ἐμοὶ γὰρ τὸ ζῆν Χριστὸς, καὶ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν κέρδος.

[12] Maximus the President said: Securing him with irons, keep him in custody. Sitting beforehand in the morning the President, ordered the servant of God Dulas to be brought in. With him brought in, Maximus the President said: What hast thou profited, thrice-wretched, by being impious to the gods? Dulas said: It is no small gain unto God, to set at naught those who are not gods, & Christ will punish thee even alive. Maximus the President said: Pour into him meats of the sacrifices, & wine of their libations. Dulas said: Even if thou pourest into me thy whole filthy altar washed out, thou wilt do no harm to the servant of Christ. Maximus the President said: Behold, thou shalt also taste of the altars, unholy one. Dulas said: These things will harm me nothing, foul & insensible one; since indeed for that I gained from thy former tortures, thou shalt see with God what thou doest; for to me to live is Christ, & to die gain.

[13] Μάξιμος Ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν· Ἀναρτίσαντες αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τοῦ ξύλου, ἅπτεσθε τῶν σαρκῶν αὐτοῦ ἕως τῶν ἐντέρων, καὶ τὰς παρειὰς αὐτοῦ σὺν τῷ πώγονι κατασπάσατε. Δουλᾶς εἶπεν· Μόλις, ἀναίσθητε, ἀγνοεῖς τὸ κελευσθὲν ὑπὸ τοῦ πατρός σου τοῦ σατανᾶ. Καὶ ἐξελθόντων τῶν ἐντέρων αὐτοῦ, καὶ τῶν σιαγόνων τῶν ὀστέων διαλυθέντων, ἐκέλευσεν αυτὸν ἔτι φυλάττεσθαι ἐν τῷ δεσμωτηρίῳ. Ἐπενιόντων δε αὐτῶν ἐπὶ τὴν Ταρσὸν, ἐκέλευσεν ἀκολουθεῖν τούς δεσμώτας, καὶ ἐλθόντων εἰς τὸ εἰκοστὸν μίλιον, ὁ μακάριος Δουλᾶς, ποιήσας τὴν ἐν Χριστῷ σφραγῖδα, παρέδωκε τὴν ψυχήν. Καὶ ἐλθόντες ἀπὸ δεκατεσσάρων μιλίων τῆς Ταρσοῦ, ἐμήνυσεν ὁ Κομενταρήσιος τῷ Ἡγεμόνι λέγων· Δέομαι τῆς σῆς ἀρετῆς, κύριε, Δουλᾶς ὁ ἀσεβῶν εἰς τοὺς θεοὺς, διεθώνησεν εἰς τὸ εἰκοστὸν μίλιον, καὶ ἠνέχθη ἕως ὧδε, καὶ τί κελεύει ἡ ἀρετή σου; Τότε ἐκέλευσεν ὁ Ἡγεμὼν λέγων· Ῥιψατε αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν φάραγγα, ἵνα μήδε ταφῆς ἀξιωθῇ. Οἱ οὖν κυεστιονάριοι ἔῤῥιψαν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν χειμάῤῥουν, τὸν κατερχόμενον ἐν τῷ Ζεφυρίῳ.

[13] Maximus the President said: Hanging him upon the wood, touch his flesh as far as the entrails, & tear down his cheeks with the beard. Dulas said: Hardly, insensible one, dost thou not know what has been commanded by thy father Satan. And with his entrails coming out, & the bones of his jaws being dissolved, he ordered him still to be kept in the prison. As they were going to Tarsus, he ordered the prisoners to follow, & having come to the twentieth milestone, the blessed Dulas, having made the seal in Christ, delivered up his soul. And having come from fourteen milestones from Tarsus, the Commentariensis reported to the President saying: I beseech thy virtue, lord, Dulas the one impious to the gods, expired at the twentieth milestone, & has been carried as far as here, & what does thy virtue command? Then the President ordered saying: Cast him into the ravine, that he may not even be deemed worthy of burial. The questionaries therefore cast him into the torrent, which descends in Zephyrium.

[14] Καὶ ποιμένων κύνες, ὁσφρανθέντες τὸ λείψανον τοῦ Ἁγίου, ὁ μὲν εἶς κύων παρέμενεν φυλάσσων τὸ τίμιον σῶμα, μὴ ἐάσας ὄρνεον ἅψασθαι αὐτοῦ ὁ δὲ ἕτερος κρατήσας τοῦ ποιμένος τὸ παλλίον τῷ στόματι, ἤγαγεν αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν Ἅγιον Δουλᾶν· καὶ γνωστὸν ἐγένετο τῇ κώμῃ, καὶ ἐλθόντες συνέστειλαν τὸ ἅγιον λείψανον, αἰνοῦντες τὸν Θεὸν, ὅτι οὐκ ἀπιστερίθησαν τοῦ τιμίου λειψάνου· ἀλλ᾽ ὅθεν ἐξῆλθεν τὸ λείψανον ζῶν, πάλιν ἐκεῖσε κατήντησεν, καὶ λαβόντες αὐτὸ κατέθεντο σεμνῶς,δοξάζοντες τὸν κύριον ἡμῶν τὸν Χριστὸν, εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας, Ἀμὴν.

[14] And shepherds' dogs, sniffing the remains of the Saint, one dog remained guarding the precious body, not allowing a bird to touch it, & the other holding the shepherd's cloak in his mouth, led him to the holy Dulas; & it became known to the village, & coming they gathered up the holy remains, praising God, that they were not deprived of the precious remains; but whence the remains went forth living, again thither they came back, & receiving it they laid it down solemnly, glorifying our Lord Christ, unto the ages, Amen.

[1] At which time Satan was being venerated by those who were worthy of him, S. Tatianus Dulas brought before the President. & the superstition & error of idols was vigorous, but Maximus presided over Cilicia; Tatianus was reported, by surname Dulas, a just man & fearing God, who by the testimony of the whole nation was proved to keep piety & in every matter justice: he, I say, was reported before the President, that he professed the faith of Christ. Wherefore he was being detained in prison by the Commentariensis, with him so relating to the President: Just as thou hast commanded, the chiefs of the satellites, searching out the whole region as far as the city of the Zephyrites, apprehended a certain follower of the impious religion of the Christians, whom I have presented to thy sincere & illustrious tribunal. He said these things. To whom President Maximus: At which time, he said, I go around the cities themselves, all who are in prison, I will order to be led to me. When therefore he had entered the city, & sat on the tribunal, he ordered first to be brought to him Dulas, whom we said above: Who when he was entering before the President, thus prayed to God: Christ son of God, who art merciful, thou hast said through the mouth of David; Open wide thy mouth, & I will fill it. Thou hast also said in the Gospels; Be not solicitous, how

or what you shall speak. Now therefore, Lord Jesus Christ, send thy Angel, & give me speech opening my mouth, that entering to the most criminal Maximus, stirring himself up by prayer, I may refute his impiety. But as for the blows, since I have thee before my eyes, I do not fear his torments, & my body I will willingly propose to the President. For unless I deliver my body so that I burn, what crowns of good things shall I be able to receive? What scars shall I show to my Lord Jesus Christ, that he seeing them, may use benignity toward me, & remit my sins?

[2] When he had said these things, the soldiers stripped him of his cloak, & presented him bound to the President. Then the great President: Come, he said, say in few words, by what name thou art called. Then Dulas: Servant of Christ I am. To this Maximus: Since that name, he said, can bring thee no advantage, tell thy natural name. Dulas answered: Have I not made my name manifest to thee? By the true & certain name I am called Tatianus: but by that which was imposed on me by men, Dulas: & so being so called, in truth I am the servant of Christ. Not yet, said Maximus, hast thou experienced the terror of judgment. Now therefore say, of what nation thou art, of what place, & he professes himself a Christian. or of what race. To this Dulas said: I am by nation a Cilician, from the village of Praetorias, of bright race, & a Christian from a child. Then President Maximus said: Since thou art sprung from bright race, thou shouldst yield to the unconquered Emperors; & approaching the gods, sacrifice to them with even mind, that both by us thou mayest be honored, & with the August Emperors mayest be held great & illustrious. Dulas answered: Thy honors & the ranks of the Augusti be unto you, despising vain promises. & to all those who do not know God. But from me may God avert this, that I should advance in any other matter, than in the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ.

[3] When the President Maximus had seen him so feeling: Stretched out, he said, beat that one with rods, & admonish the man, he is beaten with rods: that he cease to be insane. But Dulas, when he was being struck with blows, was saying: I give thanks to thee, Christ, that I have been deemed worthy, who for the confession of thy name should suffer these things. Maximus was hearing these things, & reproached him with these: What does thy Christ profit thee now, when thou art wholly wounded? Dost thou not yet perceive, foolish man? To whom Dulas: What? Does not blessed the Apostle Paul say: No one is crowned, unless he has contended lawfully? 2 Tim. 2. Then Maximus: Therefore, he said, beaten thou shalt obtain a crown? Dulas answered: I today against thy brother d the devil sustain a contest: if therefore I shall conquer the armor of Satan e, thee, I say, the minister of Satan; in heaven I shall receive a crown. Why, said Maximus, dost thou so err, having faith in a man fixed on a cross? To this Dulas: I would have thee say, whether it is preferable to believe in a man crucified, that is, in the living & true God; or in stones & woods, works of men's hands.

[4] Most criminal one, said Maximus, does the great god Apollo seem to thee a human work? Dulas said: Truly by that name thou hast called Apollo. objecting the incontinence of Apollo. For applying thy mind to him, thou hast destroyed thy soul: & not only thine, but also of those whom thou persuadest to adore him. But know this, that God himself will require from thy hands the souls, which by compelling thou hast destroyed. As for impious Apollo, I will tell thee, of what kind he was. He was, as thou now art, incontinent: & when he had been captured by the love of Daphne, & had given her many monies; the promises, which he had received from her, he did not obtain. I ask, what kind of God is this, who wounded by love,

could not obtain her whom he was loving? How then canst thou hope, that thou shouldst obtain something through him? Truly the things which are sung by you about him, are worthy of laughter, or rather of mourning. For whom a meretricious woman, execrable, & full of all impurity, held as nothing, Apollo, I say, thy own, in whose face she herself spat, dost thou as God, adore him? Dost thou see, how worthy of mourning is your impiety?

[5] Hearing these things Maximus: Turn, he said, that one to the other side, & strike his belly. Then Athanasius the Cornicularius said: Obey the President: Dost thou not see thy entrails leaping out? Come, he is beaten on the belly said Dulas, thou, who art the counsellor & minister of the devil, take counsel for thyself & for thy President, how ye may be able to persuade Daphne, that she should wish to copulate with your god Apollo, lest consumed by love he perish: for I have my counsellor my Lord Jesus Christ. Then Maximus: Bring the grate, & kindle it vehemently, & that one, as cursing the gods, place upon it. But Dulas: Thanks, he said, doth thy Apollo give thee in Gehenna, that thou providest for him fire never to be extinguished; he is burnt on the grate: & he will render thee thanks, namely this, that together with himself thou be thrust to the outer darkness: then I too shall be able to laugh at thee, impious patron of Apollo.

[6] When however the executioners had burnt almost the whole body of the Martyr, they accomplished nothing: nor did they persuade the servant of God, to desist from the faith of Christ. Then President Maximus ordered, that the soldiers should guard the man so burnt in the interior prison, constant in his seat nor should attend him with any care, adding these things; Lest some of the impious men proclaim him blessed for this, that bearing himself impiously toward our gods, he has endured torments. The Saint therefore was in chains, is led to prison. & without intermission was celebrating the glory of God, & was praying him, that he should complete the course of martyrdom.

[7] After five days Maximus sitting on the tribunal, asked whether that criminal, & follower of the impious religion of the Christians, still lived: whom also he ordered to be led to the tribunal. Athanasius the Cornicularius answered the Prefect: So constant, & prepared for defense, & unharmed is that man, that he has not even any scar in his body; & he ordered him to be brought in. divinely healed Whom when the President had seen wholly sound, & with quite a cheerful face; O most criminal, he said, satellitium! did I not order you, that ye should give no care to that one? To this Pegasius Prefect of the commentaries: By thy amplitude, in the interior prison he was guarded, having on his neck an effigy of Hercules, heavy with the weight of three hundred pounds: but how he became sound, none of us has recognized. Then Dulas: O insipient President, behold my Christ has made me sound, & has rendered my body suitable for receiving thy blows, that thou mayest recognize that God is our physician, who men placing their hope in him, in a certain admirable manner is wont to cure: at the same time too, that I should receive a double crown of martyrdom, & thou shouldst suffer double everlasting pains. he says his Christ the physician has done this, But if thou hadst endured such blows for the name of thy Apollo, would that Apollo, whom thou callest thy God, have been able to bring thee health, just as my Christ has brought me health.

[8] Then Maximus; Since that man does not cease to throw curses upon our gods, anoint his head with oil, & place burning coals upon it. To whom Dulas: Although, he said, thou hast burnt my brain,

what then, impious President? Devise other torments. But the President said: Put mustard k into his nostrils. I deride, said Dulas, all thy tortures. his head is burnt But the President: Lacerate constantly his back with sharp iron, & pour the most acerbic vinegar over the blows: then with sharp shells grind his back. While these were being done, the holy Martyr was saying: Jesus Christ, be near thy servant: for behold upon my back the sinners are building, tortured with mustard, prolonging their iniquity. Then Maximus said: At least now be persuaded, & confess that there are gods. To this Dulas: Surely thy gods help thee & thy malice, his back is lacerated. especially Venus & Diana. I will tell, if it pleases, also of other goddesses of thine & their crimes. Break, the jaws & legs are broken. said Maximus, his jaws, lest he curse the gods: also break his legs, & render him such, that he may not be able to bring forth even one word.

[9] Then Dulas: Dost thou, most iniquitous President, beat me who speak true things, that Venus herself & the other goddesses of thine bared their members contending among themselves, l about the greater lasciviousness, which would be more apt for the meretricious life, & set up Paris that shepherd as judge for themselves; when they wished to test, which of them might sin better? Nonetheless he expounds the faith Why art thou angered, when thou art convicted of the deeds of thy execrable goddesses? My God is true, who also willed to be made man, who even when he had been fixed on the cross, & afterwards buried, on the third day rose again, & sits at the right hand of the Father, & is about to come with fire for destroying thy gods. & the mystery of the Trinity, Hearing these things Maximus, said: Dost thou see, criminal, how thou too hast two gods? To this Dulas: Sin not, he said, & err not, saying two gods: for it is the Trinity, which we venerate. Therefore, said Maximus, thou hast three gods. The Trinity, said Dulas, I confess & adore. I believe in the Father, I confess the Son, I adore the Holy Spirit. Then President Maximus: Persuade me, he said, how believing in one God, thou preachest three.

[10] To this Dulas answered: The animal man does not perceive those things, which are of the spirit of God. Yet for the sake of those, who are present, I will say. Just as thou, who art a man, hast speech: so also God

the Father almighty, has a Word of the same substance, & his most holy Spirit. Who our God when he first formed man, & honored him with his image, the fall of Adam, breathed into him the spirit of life, whom also he placed in paradise. But after that Satan, now through thee exercises his will, was zealous to impel man to the violation of the divine precept, just as now also he does through thee, exterminated man himself from the divine precepts. Wherefore God when the work, which he had formed, & which had fallen, he willed to raise up, & that, which had erred, he willed to lead back into the way, sent his son, that is, the Word. And so the Word of God dwelt in that holy Virgin, & was begotten from her, through which the Father himself gave salvation to the world. Then Maximus said: Some Word therefore, begets a man? By no means, said Dulas, mystery of the Incarnation, dost thou understand the mystery of God: but if thou knewest the virtue of the omnipotent God, thou couldst know, that he who made man from dust, who established the earth upon the waters, who consolidated the heaven, who made all nature, he himself is Christ. For since the condition of man could not see divinity, that lover of the human race, on account of his charity toward men, was made man, & took on human humility: so that as through one man first formed death itself entered into the world, so also through one man, our Lord

Jesus Christ, the resurrection of the dead might be induced.

[11] Then the President: What sayest thou? Is there even a resurrection of the dead? Most assuredly, said Dulas. For how shall God judge the world, unless the dead have risen? But he: I would not have thee bring those artificial discourses to me: but suffer, if we shall have been dead, the resurrection of the dead. us to lie dead. Truly, said Dulas, thou hast said, that ye are dead: for since ye have faith in dead idols, ye shall never come to the resurrection of life, but to disgrace & everlasting punishment. But all men must stand before the tribunal of Christ, & render an account of those things, which they have done.

[12] Then Maximus said: Bind that man with iron chains, & keep him in prison. But on the morrow in the morning the President ordered the servant of God Dulas to be brought in. To whom now brought in: What, he said, in vain libations are thrust into his mouth: most wretched man, has been the use to thee of exercising impiety against our gods? Dulas answered: I receive the greatest utility with God, when those, who are not gods, I reprobate: but thee still living Christ shall punish. Then said Maximus: Cast into his mouth the flesh of victims, & wine of libations. Although, said Dulas, thou shouldst wash off thy whole execrable altar, & pour it into my mouth, yet by that matter thou wilt not injure the servant of Christ. Behold, said Maximus, that thou hast tasted flesh from our altars, most criminal man. But Dulas: These things harm me nothing, execrable & stupid President. For what would it have profited me to bear the prior tortures, if the matter were so, as thou sayest? But, with God helping, thou wilt see what thou doest: to me to live is Christ, & to die is gain.

[13] Then Maximus ordered the man to be hanged on a wood, & his flesh to be lacerated as far as the entrails, his jaws too to be torn away with the chin. To whom Dulas: Dost thou, he dies on the way: stupid one, not know that thou hast been ordered by Satan thy father to do these things? And when his entrails had been bared, & his jaws dissolved from the bones; the President ordered Dulas to be kept in prison. And when he was returning to the city of Tarsus of Cilicia, he ordered the bound Christians to follow. But when they had proceeded to the twentieth milestone, B. Dulas fortifying himself with the sign of Christ, delivered his soul to God. And so since the satellites were, fourteen milestones far from Tarsus, the Commentariensis announced to the President, that Dulas, bearing himself impiously against the gods, had died, & his cadaver had been carried even to that place: but he was asking, what he would wish to be done. Then the President: Cast, he said, him into some valley, that he may lack burial. The satellites therefore cast the cadaver of the martyr into the torrent, which sloped to Zephyrium.

[14] But when the dogs of shepherds, had smelt the Relics of the holy Martyr; where the body kept by a dog is buried. one of them was guarding that venerable body, & did not permit any bird to touch it; but another seizing the shepherd's cloak in his mouth, led him to S. Dulas m. But as soon as this became known in the town n, they came & gathered the holy Relics, praising God, that they had not been deprived of them; but whence that body had gone forth alive, thither also having completed martyrdom it had returned. Therefore that one received with much veneration they laid back, our Lord Jesus Christ's glory acclaiming together, in eternal ages, Amen.

below κώμη a village, a town is called, should be distinguished from Zephyrium, under whose district situated the place Praetorias of Zephyrium ought to be called, not Zephyrium Praetorias: & therefore I change what below Sirletus translates Κώμην as City.

a. Scribe Sirletus had translated & below num. 13 Master of the Commentaries: but I restore the word, usual to the Latins & frequent in the Theodosian Code. But Commentariensis (whence the Greek Κομμενταρήσιος) is called the Custodian of the prison, because the Commentaries, that is, the records of custodies & of the accused, & the inscriptions of crimes were held by him, or also written by him.
b. Sirletus adds Praetoriadem, which I omitted, because it is lacking in our copy; but I think Praetoriadem which
