ON THE HOLY MARTYRS

VITALIS, CRISPINUS, MARTYRIA.

From the same Martyrologies distinctly from the preceding ones.

Commentary

Vitalis, Martyr (S.)

Crispinus, Martyr (S.)

Martyria, Martyr (S.)

These Martyrs are joined to the others already recounted, as crowned in the city of Tomi, in three copies of the Hieronymian Martyrology, namely the Lucca, Corbey, and Blume copies. In the Utrecht Mss. of the Church of S. Mary and the Trier of S. Martin it is read thus: In the city of Tomi, of Paul and Cyriacus and eight others. For so many in total are constituted by the five aforesaid with these three. Meanwhile in the most ancient Ms. Hieronymian copy of the Epternach monastery, after the seven Martyrs in the city of Tomi who suffered are recounted, these things are added: Elsewhere, of Vitalis, Crispinus, Martyria. In the same manner in the very ancient Ms. of the Queen of Sweden it is read: And elsewhere of Vitalis, Crispinus, Martyria. The Barberini Mss. separates them from the preceding in this way: On the same day the passion of SS. Crispinus and Vitalis, Martyrs. The Rheinau Ms.: Likewise of Vitalis, Martyria. These things being thus considered, we think that the particle "elsewhere" was more easily omitted than thoughtlessly added. In what place however, and whether they were crowned with martyrdom in different cities, we cannot in the silence of the ancients declare.

Support the Translation

The Acta Sanctorum has never been available in English. This site is translating all of it: January through July are done, August is underway, and the calendar runs to November 10, where the Bollandists stopped in 1940. The scholarship pipeline is built; what remains is a compute bill. Contributions go directly to translating more of the calendar.

The Acta was a funded enterprise for three centuries; the translation runs the same way. Everything here is free and stays free whether you give or not. Wroot Press is a small independent press — an imprint of Wroot Labs LLC, not a charity. Contributions aren't tax-deductible; they buy compute.
