CONCERNING S. GERASIMUS, A CITIZEN OF S. LORENZO,

IN THE DIOCESE OF REGGIO IN CALABRIA.

A notice of the cult from the Italia Sacra of Ferdinand Ughelli.

Gerasimus, citizen of S. Lorenzo in Calabria (S.)

D. P.

Among the eight notable towns which, by the testimony of Ughelli tome 9 of Italia Sacra, column 429, Of his memory nothing today survives, the diocese of Reggio contains, the fifth is reckoned that of S. Lorenzo, situated in a lofty place, and distant five miles from the Sicilian strait, where there is the best flax and most approved cheese, besides other commodities of the surrounding country. From here flows the river Thales, bounding the people of Locri from those of Reggio, named in Magini's maps Tuccus; where by the name of the Locrians the diocese of Bova seems to be understood, distinct from the diocese of Gerace which succeeded the destroyed Locri, and to be reckoned among the ancient Locrians, inasmuch as these look upon the eastern flank of the farthest Apennine, the Bovenses upon the western. Here, says the same Ughelli from whom I took these things, in the church of S. Angelo, rests the body of S. Gerasimus, a citizen of this town, whose feast is kept on the 8th of the Kalends of July. besides the cult still flourishing. I sent thither several letters, that I might learn what is the state of that Body there, what is the day of the cult, and whether there exist any Acts of his Life or Miracles: but I brought back no other answer, and that several times repeated, than that concerning the cult for the day 24 June it is established from the use still flourishing: that concerning the body resting there, it is held by tradition; nothing else is known. I therefore make an end of inquiring, ready to receive gladly, if by happy chance anything be brought to light.
