CONCERNING SS. SALONITA, BIGATUS, LAMTANUS, LUNITANUS,

MARTYRS AT THESSALONICA IN MACEDONIA.

Notice from ancient Ms. Martyrologies.

Salonita, Martyr, at Thessalonica in Macedonia (S.)

Bigatus, Martyr, at Thessalonica in Macedonia (S.)

Lamtanus, Martyr, at Thessalonica in Macedonia (S.)

Lunitanus, Martyr, at Thessalonica in Macedonia (S.)

G. H.

An old Ms. Martyrology of the most Serene

Queen of Sweden, published by Holstenius

in his Animadversions on the Roman

Martyrology, has these things:

At Thessalonica S. Lambanitis and

of three others. Of these four

the names are thus expressed in the Lucca copy of the Hieronymian

Martyrology: At Thessalonica of Lunitanus,

At Thessalonica, of Bigatus brother of Lamtanus.

In the Corbie copy three are recorded in these words:

At Thessalonica of Lanitanus, At Thessalonica,

of Bagatus, of the brothers. The Epternach copy

thus sets them forth: At Thessalonica of Salonita, of Bigatus,

of Lamtanus. But the Blumian one: At Thessalonica, of Lamtanus,

At Thessalonica. The Roman Ms. of the library of Cardinal

Barberini: At Thessalonica of Lamsacus, and of Bogissus.

The Trier Ms.: At Thessalonica of Lamtamus

and of Bigatus. Rabanus relates them thus: At Thessalonica

of Bigatus, of Lantanus. Which words were thence transferred

to the Martyrology published under the name of Bede.

The Florentine Mss. of the Grand Duke and of Strozzi:

At Thessalonica of the holy Martyrs, Bigatius,

Lateranus. Behold with how great variety these Thessalonian

Martyrs are related. In the Epternach one the first

name is written Salonita, in others Thesaulonica and

Thessalonica. The second, of Bigatus, in others

Bagatus and Bigittus; the third, Lamtanus, in others Lantanus

and Lampsacus, to which the fourth name in the Lucca one

is Lunitanus, in the Corbie one Lanitanus. Now

indeed the place-name Thessalonica being omitted, the names are found

in the Augsburg Ms. of S. Udalric, Bigatus,

Banthanius; in the Parisian one of Labbe, Bigatus, Lamentanus,

in the old Ms. of the monastery of S. Cyriacus, Lamtanius,

Labuncia. The Casinate and Altemps ones,

have Lamsanus, Solonica. But at Rome are ascribed

in the Vatican Ms. of S. Peter the names Lampsais, They are referred also to June 26.

Salonica. And at Alexandria are attributed in the Ms.

of Aachen Bigatus, Lantanus. Again on the 26th day

of June in the Mss. of Reichenau and Rheinau these things

are read: At Thessalonica of Lantanus, of Bigatus, or

Bigitus: likewise in the Epternach Ms. And At Thessalonica

of Lantinus. So also Bigatus is related by

Notker, but joined with the Alexandrians.
