ON THE HOLY MARTYRS,
THERAPON, MACARIUS, MARCUS, AND MARCIA.
From the Manuscript Synaxaries of Paris and Milan.
CommentaryTherapon, Martyr among the Greeks (S.)
Macarius, Martyr among the Greeks (S.)
Marcus, Martyr among the Greeks (S.)
Marcia, Martyr among the Greeks (S.)
D. P.
The joined memory of these four is nowhere
else found than in
the notable Synaxary of the city of Constantinople,
which our Sirmond
acquired for his College at Paris, and
which from the old name of that College we often
call the Claromontane; where it is thus read, after the memory
of S. Rufus, whom we, following the Roman Martyrology,
deferred to the 21st of November: And
of the
holy
Martyrs
Therapon,
Macarius,
Marcus,
and
Marcia;
And of the Holy Martyrs, Therapon,
Macarius, Marcus, and Marcia. We found another in the Ambrosian
Library at Milan, where Therapon alone
is honored with the title of Martyr: and apart from
him are recorded the Saints Marcus and Maria, Macarius
being omitted, in this manner: and
of the
holy
Martyr
Therapon,
and
of the
holy ones
Marcus
and
Maria: which
I did not wish to conceal, if perhaps from elsewhere more light might
sometime be brought to bear here, by which it might be established that two or
three of the aforesaid are to be reckoned among the Confessors;
and that this is the Therapon, concerning whom—suffering in Cyprus
and translated to Constantinople—we treated on the 27th of May.
For it may be that the Relics of all four, or at least of three,
though venerable under different titles, were placed together in the same
location, and under that title were ascribed
to the same day as well.
