When we in the year 1661, in the monastery
of Monte Cassino with great kindness
received, were examining the codices written in Lombardic
character,
with which the whole Library was filled;
we found two ancient Martyrologies,
which we caused to be copied for us, and in one
of them we found these things on this day: On the 6th of the Kalends
of July the birthday of the holy Martyrs, Pontamius,
Nemesius, Secundinus and Maximus. There are of these
names Martyrs inscribed in the Martyrologies on various days
of the year, and on this day Potaminus among the Martyrs
of Alexandria is reckoned, but we judge [him] diverse from this
Pontamius. Nemesius also is numbered
among the sons of S. Symphorosa, who reported by various Martyrologists on the 27th of June,
in the Roman Martyrology are commemorated on the 18th day of July.
The same we say of Secundinus and Maximus:
but because these four Martyrs are not found
placed together, them on account of the antiquity of the aforepraised
Martyrology we here give.
