CONCERNING ST. ASCLINUS OR ASCLEPIUS, AND SAINT PAMPHILUS,

MARTYRS OF COLOGNE (COLONIA AGRIPPINA).

From the Hieronymian Martyrology, and others.

Commentary

Asclinus, or Asclepius, Martyr of Cologne (Colonia Agrippina) (St.)

Pamphilus, Martyr of Cologne (Colonia Agrippina) (St.)

G. H.

This pair of Martyrs is celebrated by four ancient copies of the Hieronymian Martyrology with these words: At Agrippina, of Asclinus, Pamphilus. Which same things have the manuscripts of Reichenau in Swabia, and of Rheinau in Switzerland, and another of the Queen of Sweden. But Rabanus and Notker in their Martyrologies thus set forth the names: At Agrippina, of Asclepius and Pamphilus. In the manuscript Florarium and the manuscript Ado of Liège of St. Lawrence, there is mention of St. Asclinus. In the Martyrology published under the name of Bede, thus is read: At Agrippina of SS. Asclyppus, Pamphilus. The Trier manuscript of St. Maximin: In the city of Cologne of St. Pamphilus: whose memory also is celebrated in the manuscripts of Monte Cassino, Altemps, another of St. Cyriacus, and Aachen: for which the name of Paul is had in the manuscripts of Brussels of St. Gudula, of Augsburg of St. Udalric, and of Paris of Labbe. But because he is not joined to Asclinus or Asclepius, nor is ascribed to Agrippina, but is mingled with other Martyrs; it can be understood to be the Apostle Paul, whose commemoration on this day is celebrated with solemn veneration.
