ON SAINT PIAMUN, VIRGIN DEVOTED TO GOD, IN EGYPT.

Commentary

Piamun, Virgin in Egypt (Saint)

[1] The Greeks in the large Menaea and in the Lives of the Saints of Maximus, Bishop of Cythera, celebrate on the third day of March the Birthday of this Virgin with these words: "On the same day, Saint Piamun the Virgin fell asleep in peace." Saint Piamun the Virgin, Our Laherius celebrates her in his Menologion of Virgins on March 9. Her Life is found in the Lausiac History of Palladius, Bishop of Helenopolis, chapter 37, under this title: "On Amma Piamun." In Hesychius, "Amma" means "mother, nurse." But Palladius in chapter 42 says that "Ammas" are called spiritual mothers. What therefore "Abbas" is among monks, "Amma" is among consecrated Virgins. In the Paradise of Heraclides, chapter 18, the same Acts are found with this title: "Life of Piamonis the Virgin." or Piamon, But in Greek in Palladius: Περὶ Πιαμοῦν παρθένου, and the following is related:

[2] "There was a certain Virgin, Piamun, who lived the years of her life with her own mother, alone with her alone, eating in the evening and spinning flax. She was deemed worthy of the grace of foretelling the future among men. It happened once in Egypt, she is gifted with the grace of prophecy: when the Nile was rising, that village attacked village; for they fight over the distribution of the waters, to such an extent that killings and woundings follow. A more powerful village attacked her village, and a multitude of men came with lances and clubs to destroy her village. An Angel stood by this blessed woman, revealing their invasion, and summoning the Presbyters of the village, she said to them:

"Go out and from this village meet those who are coming against you, lest you too perish together with the village, and ask them to desist from the ambush prepared against you." The terrified Presbyters fell at her feet, asking her and saying: "We do not dare to go out to meet them, for we know their drunkenness and insolence. But if you show mercy to us and to the entire village and to your house, go out yourself to meet them and turn them back in peace." When she had not consented, she went into her little dwelling and stood the whole night praying, not even bending her knee, but entreating, saying: after pouring forth prayers the whole night, "Lord, you who judge the earth, to whom nothing that is unjust is pleasing, when this prayer comes to you, may your power make them stand immovable like a pillar, wherever it may find them." When this holy Virgin had thus prayed, something of this kind happened: the enemies, around the first hour, at a distance of three miles, fixed in place like a pillar, she renders the enemies immovable. could not be dislodged. It was also revealed to them that it was through the intercession of the servant of Christ, Piamun, that this impediment had befallen them; and they sent to the village and sought peace, saying: "Give thanks to God and to the prayers of Piamun, which prevented us from inflicting a great evil upon you."
