ON THE HOLY MARTYRS DANDA, EUNICA OR LEUNUCA OR LEUNUNCULA, SECUNDUS OR SUCCUNDUS, NESTOR, ALSO SECUNDUS, SERRUS OR SERGIUS, OCCATUS OR OPTATUS, AND ANOTHER DANDA, IN THRACE.
CommentaryDanda, Martyr in Thrace (St.)
Eunica, or Leonunca, or Leununcula, Martyr in Thrace (St.)
Secundus, or Succundus, Martyr in Thrace (St.)
Nestor, Martyr in Thrace (St.)
Secundus the other, Martyr in Thrace (St.)
Serrus, or Sergius, Martyr in Thrace (St.)
Occatus, or Optatus, Martyr in Thrace (St.)
Danda the other, Martyr in Thrace (St.)
Notker, after listing the Antiochene Martyrs, adds in his Martyrology: In Thrace, of Danda, Eunica, Secundus, Sergius, Optatus. The manuscript Martyrology of the Queen of Sweden: In a city of Thrace, the Birthday of SS. Danda, Senucus, Secundus. In the Augsburg manuscript of St. Ulrich and the Paris manuscript of Labbe, with no place indicated, Danda is found. There are more in the Martyrology of St. Jerome printed at Paris: In Thrace, of Danda, Leununcula, Secundus, Nestor, Artaxius, Quintus, likewise Secundus, Serrus, Occatis, likewise Danda. In our own manuscript, and the Blume and Lucca copies also of St. Jerome, there is some diversity in the inscription of names: and in place of Leununcula there is read Leunuca or Leonuca, above Eunica; and perhaps Senucus. For the first Secundus, in the Lucca manuscript there is Sucundus, as for Serrus and Occatus there is Ferrus and Occatus; to others Ocatus; in Notker, Sergius and Optatus. We omit from the heading Artaxius and Quintus, whom we listed above among the first group of Africans. If, however, others attach them to these, we shall permit it. We have left Nestor repeated here, although another is numbered among the Antiochene Martyrs. Certainly from bare names accurate knowledge cannot be had.
ON THE HOLY MARTYRS SAURUS OR SATYRUS, SILVANUS, ROGATUS OR ROGATA, MANILUS OR MARULUS, AND CYPRIANUS, IN AFRICA.
CommentarySaurus, or Satyrus, Martyr in Africa (St.)
Silvanus, Martyr in Africa (St.)
Rogatus, or Rogata, Martyr in Africa (St.)
Manlius, or Marulus, Martyr in Africa (St.)
Cyprianus, Martyr in Africa (St.)
The Martyrology of St. Jerome printed at Paris brings forth these last Martyrs: In Africa, of Saurus, Silvanus, Rogatus, Manilus. The same is found in the Lucca and Blume copies of the same St. Jerome: in our codex, in place of Saurus is written Satyrus. In the ancient Augsburg manuscript of St. Ulrich, the memory of Rogatus and Manilus is celebrated; for whom in the Paris manuscript of Labbe is written Rogata and Marulus. To these we add St. Cyprianus the Martyr, who after SS. Perpetua and Felicitas is appended in the very ancient codex of the Cassino monastery, written in Lombard script. In his place in the manuscript Martyrology of Liessies, there is a commemoration of St. Cassianus the Bishop, but perhaps Martyr should be read instead. But since we can determine nothing here except by conjecture, we prefer to abstain.
