ON THE HOLY MARTYRS SERVANUS OR SILVANUS, ROGATUS, EROIUS OR CROCUS, VICTORINA OR VICTORINUS.

Commentary

Ervanus, or Silvanus, Martyr (St.)

Rogatus, Martyr (St.)

Eroius, or Crocus, Martyr (St.)

Victorina, or Victorinus, Martyr (St.)

In the Martyrology of St. Jerome, which written in an ancient script is preserved among us, there is this: On the Nones of March, In Africa, of Satyrus, Revocatus, Jocundus, Saturninus (of whom we believe we have already treated). Elsewhere, of Silvanus, Rogatus, Eroius, Victorina. But without the intervening word "elsewhere," in the Lucca copy they are thus joined to the other Africans: of Servanus, Rogatus, Eroius, and Victorina. In the Blume codex, "Estius" is read for "Eroius"; the rest is the same. In the Martyrology of St. Jerome printed at Paris, also with the word "elsewhere" omitted, they are thus joined to the Africans: of Victorinus, Saturninus, Servanus, Rogatus, Crocus. Of these, Saturninus, transposed, belongs to the former class. In the Aachen manuscript it reads thus: In Africa, the birthday of Satyrus, Revocatus (of whom we have treated), Silvanus, Rogatus, Eroius. In the manuscript of St. Ulrich at Augsburg and the Paris manuscript of our Labbe, Servanus is also listed, and in the Paris manuscript with the word "elsewhere" interposed; and so in two manuscripts they are separated from the former Africans, to whom in four codices they are joined. He who in four codices is Servanus, in three is written Silvanus. But since the latter is joined to other Africans to be given shortly, we prefer to retain the name Servanus. Rogatus is expressed everywhere; but he who is Erous or Eroius, in the Blume codex is Estius, and in the Paris printed edition is called Crocus. He who in three manuscripts is Victorina or Victurina, in the printed edition is Victorinus. But in the Codex of Cardinal Barberini, Victorinus is also appended to SS. Perpetua and Felicitas, about whom we doubted whether he should be referred to March 6, where in all the Martyrologies Victor and Victorinus are commonly found inscribed, but having suffered in Macedonia. Hermann Greuen in his additions to Usuard has this: Likewise of SS. Silvanus, Rogatus, Eroius. To these Victorinus is added in the Supplement of the Brussels Charterhouse. If, finally, it seems to some that Saturus, Revocatus, Jocundus, and Saturninus should be joined to these and all assigned to Africa together, we shall not oppose them, since they are again joined to the following Antiochenes.
