[1] The Martyrology of St. Jerome begins this day with the Martyrs of Nicomedia in these words: On the third day before the Ides of March. At Nicomedia, of Macedonius the Priest, Patricia his wife, and Modesta their daughter. Of Cyrion the Priest, The memory of all in the Martyrology of St. Jerome. Saturninus, Januarius, Salvius, Petronius, Modestinus, Zosimus, Eustasius the Priest and Basilla, Eppepodus the Deacon, with two others. Exactly the same names, with none removed or added, are read in four ancient copies which we cite throughout; however, some names are written differently, such as Macedonis, Matricia and Mitricia, Cioni, Petruni, Silvius, Basilissa (with the word "wife" attached to her name), and Eppodi. In the manuscript from Tamlacht among the Irish the following are found: Of Macedonius and his wife Patricia and their daughter Modesta, Chion, Saturninus, Silvius, Januarius, Petronius, Zosimus, of some in others: Modestinus. In the genuine manuscript of the Martyrology of Usuard, the following are found: At Nicomedia, of Macedonius the Priest, Patricia his wife, and their daughter Modesta. The same are read in the Vatican manuscript of St. Peter and others under the name of Bede, likewise in the twofold Cassinese manuscript in Lombard script, the Altempsius manuscript, and that of the Queen of Sweden. From this, Holstenius notes in his observations on the Roman Martyrology that the word "Priest" should be added to Macedonius. Usuard added this, but did not call Patricia and Modesta wife and daughter -- which Rabanus, Ado, Notker, and others did. In the manuscripts of Trier (St. Martin's) and Utrecht (St. Savior's) is added: "And of thirty-two others." From these we shall give below another twenty, who suffered at Nicomedia and who together with these Saints make up the said number. But to the three already named, the memory of Cion the Priest is added from the manuscript of Corbie, that of Saturninus from the manuscript of St. Maximin, and of Cion the Priest, Saturus, and Januarius in the manuscript of Reichenau, and of Epipodius the Deacon in the manuscript of Labbaeus, who is elsewhere incorrectly written Epodus and Epipodia. On the twelfth of March, among the Martyrs who suffered in Asia, there was a St. Eustasius the Priest and Basilissa, where we examined this passage. Confused in Peter de Natalibus: Peter de Natalibus in book 3 of his Catalogue, chapter 198, confusedly has the names of these and of some of the Nicaean Martyrs, citing the Martyrology of Ado, in no codex of which, whether handwritten or printed, anything similar is contained.
