Commentary

St. Paul, Martyr at Carthage in Africa.

St. Salvator or Solutor, Martyr at Carthage in Africa.

St. Alexander, Martyr at Carthage in Africa.

St. Theophilus, Martyr at Carthage in Africa.

St. Theodolus, Martyr at Carthage in Africa.

St. Octavius, Martyr at Carthage in Africa.

St. Petronius, Martyr at Carthage in Africa.

St. Manilus, Martyr at Carthage in Africa.

This second class of Martyrs is subjoined to the Nicomedian Martyrs already listed in several Martyrologies. Their memory is contained in the distinguished Martyrology of Cardinal Barberini, though acephalous, in these words: "At Carthage, of Paul, Salvator, Alexander, Theophilus, Octavius, Memory in various Martyrologies Theodolus." For this last, "Zeodolus" is read in the distinguished Trier MS. of the monastery of St. Maximin: the rest are listed in the same order. In the Blumian Martyrology of St. Jerome, after Theodulus is added "Petrunus"; in other transcripts of St. Jerome, the name of St. James the Apostle is intruded, about which we treated among the Passed Over; which, omitted by us, thus appears as printed at Paris: "At Carthage, of Paul, Solutor, Alexander, Theophilus, Theodolus, Petronius, Manilus." In the Luccan transcript, the name Manilus is absent, and the two names are written, as they appear above, Salutor and Petrunus. In our Antwerp MS., the entry reads: "At Carthage, of Paul, Solutor, Alexander, Theophilus, Octavius, Theodolus." In the Cologne MS. of St. Mary ad Gradus: "At Carthage, of St. Paul, Salutor, Alexander, Theophilus, Octavius." From these, four are presented in this way in Notker: "At Carthage, of Paul, Salutar: Likewise of Alexander, Theophilus." The Reichenau MS.: "At Carthage, of Solutor." The Aachen MS.: "Birthday of Eucapus, Secutor, Paul" — for which it seems one should read: "Octavius, Solutor, Paul." In the Tamlacht MS. there is Paul, and on the preceding day Paul, Theophilus, Salvator, Alexander; to whom are then added in the Prague MS.: "Octavius, Theofolus" — repeated twice, for whom should be substituted Theophilus and Theodolus.
