ON SAINT CANDIDUS, ROMAN MARTYR, AT CINGOLI IN PICENUM.

Commentary

Candidus, Roman Martyr, at Cingoli in Picenum (Saint)

[1] Cingoli, once a not undistinguished city of old Picenum, concerning which in the additions to volume 2 of January, folio 1148, before the Life of Saint Exuperantius, we have treated devoutly, In the year 1650 venerates Saint Candidus, a Roman Martyr, translated to its Collegiate Church on this day: the instruments of whose translation, transcribed from the original by the hand of Bonfilius de Bernardis of Cingoli, public notary of that place, and sealed with the seal of the Gonfalonier and Prior of Cingoli, were sent to us in the year 1665 by Carolus Francischini, a noble native of the same town, and they are as follows.

[2] To Hieronymus Cardinal Verospius. In the name of the Lord. Amen. The venerable relics of the Saints reigning in heaven with Christ are accustomed to bring great aid to the faithful who are still fighting in the world against the snares and weapons of the most wicked enemy, who does not cease to plot destruction against the human race, like a roaring lion. Whence not undeservedly are such relics of the saints received with the most joyful hearts and held in the highest esteem by the faithful peoples. For this reason, the Most Eminent and Most Reverend Lord Hieronymus, Cardinal Priest Verospius of the Title of Saint Agnes in Agone, Bishop of Osimo, wishing to bestow upon the most grateful and most deserving territory of Cingoli, placed under his pastoral care as Most Eminent, some conspicuous gift from such relics of the Saints, by which the territory of Cingoli might be both richer in heavenly treasures and rendered more secure and happy by the protection of the Saints, gave as a gift the distinguished body of Saint Candidus the Martyr, exported from the city of Rome and brought to the said territory of Cingoli, The body of Saint Candidus the Martyr was given, as below, and concerning this matter he commanded that a public instrument also be drawn up. Therefore, by this present public instrument, let it be clear and known to all everywhere, that formerly the Most Illustrious and Most Reverend Lord Julius Cincius, Roman Patrician... Lieutenant in civil cases of the Most Eminent and Most Reverend Lord Cardinal Vicar of our Holy Lord the Pope, bestowed the Body of Saint Candidus the Martyr, placed and deposited in a certain wooden casket, upon the said Most Eminent and Most Reverend Lord Hieronymus, Cardinal Verospius of the Title of Saint Agnes in Agone, Bishop of Osimo; as appears from the instrument of donation, drawn up by Lord Giovanni Garsia Valentino, notary of the causes of the Most Eminent and Most Reverend Lord Cardinal Vicar, on the thirteenth day of June 1650, given to me the undersigned Notary in public and authentic form, for the purpose of inserting here word for word, the tenor of which is as follows.

[3] In the name of the Lord. Amen. Cardinal Verospius... being present, the body of Saint Candidus the Martyr, formerly extracted from the Cemetery of Saint Agnes by command of our Holy Lord the Pope, and donated and delivered to the same Most Illustrious and Reverend Lord Julius Cincius in the previous year by the Most Illustrious and Reverend Lord Antonio Rivaldo, With the faculty to dispose of it. Vice-Regent of the same Most Eminent and Reverend Lord Cardinal, with the faculty to keep it with him, to donate it to others, to transmit it outside the city, and to place it in Churches; as appears from the testimonial letters of this donation, signed by the hand of the said Most Illustrious and Reverend Lord Vice-Regent, and sealed with the seal of the said Most Eminent Lord Cardinal Vicar, produced in the records: for this purpose the said Most Illustrious and Reverend Lord Julius Cincius gave and transferred to the same Most Eminent and Reverend Cardinal Verospius every faculty and authority concerning the disposition of the said sacred Body granted to him as above.
